Built a pc last week, nothing complicated. More like swapping from one case to another and adding different ram/hd and PSU. Thats about as far as i dare go lol.

Used my anti static wrist band!

Just wondered has anyone ever killed a piece of hardware due to static?

Thanks

Damo

Not that I am aware of. But I do have full antistatic mats etc, but are rarely used! I just keep contact with the plugged in PC case.

I'm not aware of killing anything through static but there is one memory module back in the 90's that to this day I can't be 100% sure if I killed or was DOA. I got it replaced easily so I've always been happy to assume it was DOA but it's there in the back of my mind.

Never use anti-static stuff or ground the case and never had a problem. As long as you dont dress like a chav, head to toe in plastic then I dont think static is an issue.

With that method, do you turn it on at the wall, but keep it switched off on the PSU? Or keep it turned off completely?

Also I have heard of people switching off pc. Then unplugging psu. Then turning pc on. Gets rid of stored power. I have tried it and my fans span for a split second !

My 3870x2 was three years old and it kinda died on my. I may have killed it with static when cleaning out my case but I can't be sure.

Static. The silent killer.

sounds like a thriller mystery book.

Not with static. But I have killed a graphics card by short-circuiting :(. A screw had fallen on the PCB and when I switched it on it went pop.

Don't worry, it was a GeForce FX 5200, so no harm done lol.

Don't think I have, I do like switching the 240v / 110v switch on the back of PC'S and seeing a nice big bang and smoke!

Not killed it from static so much so as it was going bust the night after a power surge v_v

I still haven't got a surge protector since getting another PSU >_<

AFAIK I've never killed anything like that. I'm guilty of using the dyson on all sorts of components too :p

I think i am really lucky, dad has compressed air.

So just switch the machine on and blast away. But i do it from a distance.

I had some cheap red led fans, and started to clean them with the air.

Nearly ****ed my pants, as when they started spinning the started to glow. Thought i was going to get a shock haha NOOB!
