Has anyone killed a piece of hardware due to static...

Don't think I have, I do like switching the 240v / 110v switch on the back of PC'S and seeing a nice big bang and smoke!

I worked with a guy who kept forgetting to check which positon the switch was in on some expensive Sun hardware that had just arrived from the US. In the end he was asked not turn anything on until someone else had double checked everything. :D

DOH!

I killed a 5850 about 4 months ago. I was installing a waterblock and everything went to plan except nothing happened when I booted :( It was more likely me doing something wrong when installing the block but I was super careful so I don't see how I could have damaged it. So, it could have been static.

I killed an 800D today, forgot it was in my room and sat on it ;)

Got the co2 on standby!

What I have got plugged in, my HP MIcroserver, Main pc, spare pc, monitor, Printer, network switch, desk lamp and two HDD caddies.

Never have never will imo. I have even mucked about trying to kill stuff with static with a mate and we couldn't even in ideal conditions. Everytime something has died, it's always been for a different reason. Temps, physical abuse, old hardware, voltage too high, shorted out etc.

Just a case of be sensible really. I wouldn't normally bother, but I equally wouldn't be wearing a dressing gown like when I built my first rig - the number of times I've been zapped since then while wearing it is phenomenal!

i've killed a 5850 dropping it on a titan fenrir, but never zapped nothing building machines, dont use wrist straps or mats, just common sense lol :p
