Amazing talent on Australia's got talent

16! I wouldn't have guessed it, he looks much older.

Guy seems pretty good. I don't think he's a prodigy though, just someone who really enjoys the piano.

You really don't see enough good instrumental stuff on these (Insert Country)'s Got Talent shows.

Sorry but I wasn't impressed.

Firstly he could have easily practised that before hand. Secondly the technique wasn't very good compared to good classically trained musicians of a similar age. Thirdly I didn't think it was very good music either. :(

There are lots of jazz musicians about who can improvise decent music.

Echoing the above really, especially about the poor technique. He might have improvised it but if he can't even play without crossing his arms... :p

Sounds like someone bashing a keyboard with some slight practice?

This guy from England is better but still not that good:

My house mate is classically trained to a high level on the piano and being taught properly from a young age makes A LOT of difference.

I thought it was good too, though the bits where he was banging on the keys didn't really appeal. Someone needs to make a gif of him at 3:27 lol

Sometimes musicians can have ridiculous standards. There is a kid who caused shock waves across the guitar community recently for playing guitar god numbers absolutely flawlessly. In this vid, he plays a Paul Gilbert show-piece on a standard tuned guitar! The bit from 20 seconds in is, literally, technically insane.

Yet many turn there noses up at his skill. The most ridiculous comment I have read:

Bach was composing pieces when he was 5 years old. Why should I be impressed?

 lol

I can only guess that music is seen differently whether you're listening to it as a fan for entertainment or as a musician in a professional sense.

If you're listening for entertainment, and ignorance is bliss, you're only going to care whether it sounds good or not. Think of how many singers or musicians are out there now that on the surface, sound good, but in reality are probably pretty poor with their technique.

On the other hand, if you're a musician where music has been his/her art and craft for life then you're probably going to hold high expectations. It's the musicians that are going to notice the little nitpicks and mistakes that others are happy to turn a blind eye to.

I think it's the same for any creative profession. Once you know all of the little nuts and bolts, being more critical is only natural. Some people look at music as something that just has to sound good to be entertaining, others look at it as something that needs to be performed well to be successful.

Take the piano guy in the op. I'm no musician so i couldn't tell you whether he plays the piano well, but can he make a good sound come out of it for entertainment, probably.

It thought it was very good and he played with a lot of heart. Yes he wasn't technically perfect, but what do you expect from someone self taught who lives in the middle of nowhere? Shades of Ben Folds at times, which can't be bad.

Yes he could have practiced before but we have to take his word that he made it up on the spot. We also have to take his word that he is self taught. The fact that his technique isn't very good and that he's starring at his hands the whole way through goes some way to prove this. Of course there are classically trained musicians of a similar age who are better, they've been classically trained! At 16, I'd been playing the piano for over 8 years and my technique was a lot better than his, I couldn't create music on the spot though. He has taught himself! I should hope that there are jazz musicians who can improvise decent music. Chooka Parker is 16, taught himself how to play the piano, and creates music on the spot which at some points sounds very good. I was impressed.
