***Official Shogun Total War 2 Thread***

Thanks for that.

It looks like a steep learning curve for me.

Iv never liked games like this, although I know Im the type of person that should like this games.

I guess I never really understood the Civ games when I played them but always wanted to try again, and this looked pretty good.

big oops

decided to take down my crappy single province island neighbours so dispatched a small force that i thought would take care of them no problem,

my mistake my army slaughtered :(

SOOOOOOOO
2 full stacks loaded onto seperate ships and dispatched only for my 2 ships to be attacked then attacked again on the retreat :( cue me now down 2 full stacks plus a half stack for a crappy single province that i still haven't conquered yet

Ouch!

I learnt the hard way to send a scout ship ahead before any naval outing. Also when using ships to defend the coast you can not make a single stack work as a lookout because the eneemy can just rush past and you wont be alerted. I found sticking a single ship on its own 1 move length ahead enticed the enemy navy into battle hence alerting me.

maybe a daft question but how do you get your ship crews to regenerate?

i never seem to gain any crewmen even when in port ?

Finding this game tough even on easy! lol

How do you determine to stay as Buddhist or go Christian?

I stayed Buddhist as the majority of my clan are, so I thought it would be easier.

Are there clans who are majority Christian?

I usually stay Buddhist as most of the towns follow this religion. It seems random whether another faction takes up Christianity, but it generally makes capturing their provinces more difficult as you get religous unrest and uprisings more often.

Once you have a Nanban port in one of your provinces (buy building the option or invading an existing one) you will get the option to convert to Christianity from the faction overview pane (IIRC). I thoroughly recommend trying it at least one: it adds a whole new way of conquering your neighbours without starting wars with them (via incitment of Christian rebels who can overthrow the faction castle leaving you to attack them) and you get access to cannons (and ships with cannons) that are a lot of fun.

I like this game's policy towards religion.. if they don't believe in you (your faith), add troops to the province to bully the populace whilst you send in the preachers to change their minds.

Personally I'd want to do it (the Christianity rebellion way) just to screw with the Ikko clan whose uber-buddha influence messed with me.

Not that this game causes me to get bitter and genocidal in any way... I forget the name of the clan now but the one on the northern most island with the gold mine.. went exploring there and they made a mess of one of my armies, and then suggested we should sign a peace treaty so long as I hand over all of my monies in the process.

Well **** that, so I blockaded their one and only route to civilisation with a mediocre ship, left them with not enough food/money for the upkeep of their province so they become degenerate even with their fancy gold mine, and basically had them imprisoned on their island for ~15 years during which time they begged and pleaded every turn for me to change my mind :D

Im struggling a little splitting my self quite thin.

Im playing as the Shimazu clan.

In general there must be a right way and a wrong way to go about developing.

Im trying to build an army, a navy, repair structures and buy upgrades.

Obviously I cant afford to do this things at any fast rate... so what are the basics to building a decent economy?

So far, Iv noticed I can make cash by attacking and taking provinces.

I peacefull occupy all but 1 so far as the loot was 5000 gold, which was a god send for a peasant like myself.

Game is very good, very strategic, but very very slow paced...... after about 2 hours played, I had fought 2 battles, built a few ships, occupied 1 province and made peace with another....

Oh and all my general keep dying in battle.

You might want to try and build a few trade ships and take over some of the trade routes, you should be in quite a good position for that. If you can take over them and start making trade agreements then you will start to make a good amount of cash each turn.

Build and upgrade your farms, roads and docks etc before you start pumping money into the castle and military upgrades.

When you start to expand the army upkeep will really start to hit in, try and keep a minimum number of troops in your more safely positioned regions and the larger forces on the outskirts gaining new ones. By the time I was half way through my campaign as the Hattori most of my cities in safe areas were basically undefended, it gave me a lot more cash to focus on replenishing my armies which were expanding outwards and also upgrading buildings to give me even more income.

I did build boats straight from the beginning. I have 3 of the trade routes out of the 4 on my side of the map.

What I dont think I'v done however is spent much on roads etc... I dont seem to be making much cash per turn..

Explore with a boat (stay near coasts still) and gain visibility of more clans, then setup trade agreements with the ones you won't be warring with for a while. Be a cheapskate with agent actions (some of them are free or little cost, whereas others cost a bomb), and I was always keen to increase the development of roads and markets (so long as I had surplus food, I was always a farm whore too first and foremost as it also allows for fortifications up to the point of having 'free' troops in the garrisons).

Get hold of something like a gold mine, and you may want to park a metsuke in that province's fort ("oversee city") to boost it's trade output too.

When it comes to taxes, I started out about the 2nd or even 3rd level up if I dared, but now I just try to play the game through keeping tax on the lowest setting the whole time. With the surplus food and decent city development, the growth of the towns increasing each turn stacks up. At one point I was getting like 9k per turn and I'd have to spend around 13k to negotiate a peace treaty w/trade agreement attached (I was lucrative on trades so that helped keep the price 'down' !).

Last thing I recall, is that some of the missions and rewards allow you to make a choice between lump sum, or increased growth, for a number of turns (around 8 typically), and once you start to get a few provinces under your belt the +growth one is a healthy boost to the coffers.

One question I have, do you make money from simply owning the trade ports and having trade ships docked there, or do you have to have trade agreements with other clans to actually make cash from the trade ports?

Complaint*

One thing I find annoying , is when a rival clan enters in to diplomacy with you, it would be nice to be able to view the map before making a decision, unfortunately you have a static screen and have to negotiate first before consulting the map.

Picked this up today. Installed fine, played first tutorial, turned it off to go eat, come back and steam tells me theres a new patch. Now it won't start, errors with 'incomplete installation' Verify files picks up no problems.

Had a search around and i'm not the only one :( Want to buy patch for the broken patch!

Trade ships should be on the trading locations dotted around. You will make more money from also trading with other clans. If you are successfully trading, a trade route should appear - hover the mouse over this and it will tell you how much income it is brining in.

Regarding trade ships (or raiding ships ;)) in case it wasn't evident, having multiple ships involved increases (not linearly) the amount you get.

So you could dump 4-5 trade ships per location to ramp up the income.
