My New Car (Porsche Boxster S 987)

Really? Thanks for clearing that up.

I don't see why it would be priority for a two seater sports car to have sat nav.

That attitude is fine on a 5k snotter where you will be the last owner. This is not fine on a 20k+ motor though which you will at some point need to re-sell.

There are only 2 scenarios where the spec list isnt super important on a high end car:

1) You are loaded and you dont need the options and you plan to scrap the car when you are finished, or give it away cheap.

2) You buy it for an utter bargain whereby you can afford to take option 1 when your ownership is finished.

So do modern Lambo's and Ferrari's come with satnav?

Isn't the PCM/Sat Nav quite easy to retro fit if you want it ? It looks like a straight swap and probaly coding required by the dealer. A very quick google seems to confirm this.

I would insist on Sat Nav on any car I purchase but I can understand why to some people it is unimportant.

I can see the point Fox is making posting the other Boxter but that interior looks horrendous to me and I like red interiors but not that much red. I suspect that will have knocked a 1k or 2 off the price.

EDIT It also appears to be a misprint in the ad as it is up for 34k on the Porsche website.

Yes that RS60 price seems wrong. Sat Nav is one of those things that everyone in the trade tells you that you need on cars like this, I had the same with my 2 M3's when I never specced it as I didn't think it represented good value (£2200 option) but reality is I never lost £2200 on my cars when I sold them, about £1200 was closer so a grand saved. However, both those cars were traded and when Porsche is concerned spec is king when it comes to 2nd hand cars, though it is also where Porsche dealers take your pants down when you are buying new. I have a mate with close 40K's worth of options on his C4S and reality is it's still only worth about £3 or £4K more than a pretty basic spec version come resale....

Very nice car Peerzy, particularly in that colour. I've driven a few Boxters and they really are lovely.

Which Porsche dealership was it from? Did they treat you well?

It is an RS50 though, limited edition and very rare. Which makes it a bit of a schoolboy error that I didnt spot it was mispriced :D

Sat nav wouldn't appeal to me in the slightest. It's a 2 seater sportscar at it's best blasting around the country roads that I know like the back of my hand. On the rare occasion I need it I'll chuck the tomtom in.

Then again I'm not one for luxuries in a car anyway.....it just adds weight!

Not really buying this 'It's a sportscar so its alright without Satnav' thinking. If no compromise country road blasting was a top priority he'd have spent that £20k on a tasty Caterham instead, but he wanted a car that was more 'usable' and it without Sat Nav does make it slightly less usable. To degree varies from person to person but to imply that you wouldn't miss it whatsoever is probably a little less than truthful :)

does everyone go everywhere with sat nav or something thesedays ? how many people go somewhere new every week ? every month ?

on a van or a vectra or something i could understand but i agree with those saying that its not exactly a priority on a 2 seater

i dont think it would even be on my list of needs , never mind near the top or a decider on wether to buy or not

Modern navigation systems are not simply about having navigation. They integrated with the cars interior and the cars systems and provide a central control point for almost all of the cars functions and entertainment.

I would not buy a modern car without satnav despite not really needing it for the satnav aspect.

Porsche PCM probably isn't that great compared to e.g. TomTom but that's not the point really, it's a valued option in the same way aircon is on cars even when the owner is used to just winding down the windows. Come resale it makes it that more attractive. I know it sounds a bit peculiar but it's a £50k (when new) car, skimping on PCM when it's considered to be a "must have" option is going to turn off some people.

The OPC in Guildford, they treated me very well and can have no complaints about them.

Mileage is everything on a high value car. I'm certainly not one to be a freak for low mileage but in the £20,000+ car market you are going to take a massive bath depreciation wise on higher mileage cars.

I only do about 8k-10k a year, the master plan is to sell is after 2-3 years but we will see. A 6 year old car with 75k on it isn't exactly high mileage, more like average.

Not to rain on the parade totally but £23k sounds like quite a lot for a 59k miler Boxster S without PCM. That said the 2 year Porsche warranty is good to have.

I did look and the choice basically was a 3.2 S with Nav or a 3.4 without.

Bear in mind I had to get the warranty so if I purschased a car not from an OPC it needed to be a minimum of £2000 cheaper as that would have been the cost of 2 years worth of warranty.

It was up for £22,900 but obviously I didn't pay that. Take off the fact the warranty is worth £2000 and suddenly you're looking to find a 3.4 Boxster S with nav for less than £20k with low mileage?

This is academic as I don't currently have 20k+ to spend on a Boxster, but it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if the car I was after didn't have sat nav. It wouldn't bother me if any car I was after didn't have it.
