Cheap Hatch (preferably nippy) Suggestions Please?

I've not driven or owned a 172 but I prefer the 306 dash/interior. Looks wise, not much in it, prefer the 306 but neither are ugly cars.

I can also fit my mountain bike in the back, just take the front wheel off and it will go in with the seats flat.

The 172 is suposed to be quite good on fuel, better than a GTI-6. I would buy the best one of either that comes within your budget.

Forgot to add, the 306 aircon WILL be broken, and it won't just require a regas as the advert will claim, the pipes will be broken.

Hi,

Took the advice here and bought this: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2845686.htm

First thing was to take it to my mechanic - he owns the same car and is a Renault-trained specialist. He liked it. Reckons it's genuine. Car smells like a new car. Interior is mint. Alloys are a bit rough and it'll need 3 new tyres fairly soon. Car is immense fun to drive.

I got plenty of paperwork, supporting cam-belt change etc. Checked it via HPI and the VOSA site. However, did not get a user manual... Haven't worked out how to manually tune the stereo yet... 'Tis not the world's greatest stereo.

Anyone fancy scanning their manual for me? (only kidding) I've already set the alarm off twice today...very embarassing...

Anyway - it's fun and mileage is genuine. Fingers crossed it's reliable. Thanks to all here for the advice.

Where in this thread were you advised to spend £3000 on an 11 year old Clio!?

I was being tongue-in-cheek. I was veering towards a Civic...but knew the Clio would be more fun. I prefer the feel of the phase-1 Clio. My mechanic reckons I could sell it for more than I paid for it. The seller had it as a runabout at his Porsche servicing garage (I visited the place - he had serious cars there). Anyway, it is a lot of dough for an 11-yr old car. However, let's say I got a decent one with 50k on the clock for say, £1,800. If it needs a cam-belt, that's £5-600 straight away (my mechanic charges that and I'd be loathe to go elsewhere) - and it'll have double the mileage. This car was serviced in December 10 and has 6 months to go before another one.

Low mileage isn't the be all and end all though, and can be detrimental on some cars if old wives tales are to be believed.

Still think it's one of the best options at the lower end of the hot hatch market, that or a 306 I think.

As said, I loved my old phase 1, did be proud for many miles over 5 years.

Not sure if I'd want to pay 3k for one, 2k maybe (sold mine for £2300 I think, or £2200 I forget, with over 100k on the clock)

3k is phase 2 money, even though I'd have a phase 1 over a 2, but then you are paying for the low mileage on this one.

I've been looking for ages and haven't seen any car, P1 / P2 with the kind of paperwork this one has. It feels really tight. I budgeted up to £4k-ish for either car. This car felt like the right one and, although pricey, I couldn't afford to keep driving up and down the country to look at cars which were dishonestly advertised. I don't think my mechanic would lie to me. He could've found faults. He didn't and told me to get it serviced in December. It's a 1-owner car btw - verified by HPI and VOSA.

If you think I paid over the top, fair enough. Maybe I did. But it does smell like a new car and feels super tight. Mechanic said it felt and sounded totally different to his car, which has a high mileage. Steering wheel looks like new - quite unusual for one of these cars.

I would expect shocks/springs/bushes to start to feel baggy, as even if it hasn't been driven (potentially worse!), then its been sat in one spot with them corroding/aging. Looks like a tidy purchase to me, if the MOT milage and the condition add up then its a winner.

My Rallye had all new Peugeot dampers and springs and feels much better for it, than my GTI-6 which was almost half the milage on originals, that would understeer on power on track which is all but eliminated with the new ones on my Rallye.
