GPU???5870

Ive been out of the loop for a year so i dont know whats hte card to go for

Thanks

NEVER buy graphic card new off the bay. They are as good as no warranty cover. If it is 2nd hand for £130, that seem a bit steep since new is only around £150 of etailers (with warranty).

Yes 5870 is still a fast card, but IMO you could be better off getting either a 6950 1GB or GTX560TI 1GB for around £160...they are basically a bit faster than the 5870 out of the box, but is MUCH more overclockable.

The 5870 is nice, but most of the cards are bios limited to 900mhz, so as Marine says, unless you're happy flashing a card's bios (thereby voiding the warranty, in the unlikely case it has one) you won't get much more mileage out of it. You can spend a bit more and get a 6950 1gb or 560 (I'd go for the 560 over the 6950 1gb though). If you only want to spend, say, £120 you could get a 5850. They will overclock to 5870 levels easily. All depends if you can stretch beyond £130 or not

I have to pop in here and say the 5870 is a great card.

If you want power for a reasonable price, then the 5870 will do the job.

It also runs cool, for powerfull card, which is a feature of the 5000 series.

Its more powerfull than the 470 and only £12 more.

Dont buy it off ebay! Too much risk..... for £150 you can get it form Ocuk with guarantees!

As a side note, I took my 5870 out of my case today, my god, I had forgotten how huge it is!

MASSIVE!

5870 4TW TBH
i have all games on max
have OCd but theres no need too
got it on water but never gone over 45c

the 5870 will chomp any game that comes out this year and next no problem,i am confident this card will run bf3 on max when that comes out.

Mines not going anywhere, really has been a good buy. Will wait until at least the 28nm cards are out before i look at any upgrade.

iam sure 470 would be ahead once its overclocked and at higher level of AA (correct me if iam wrong) and also with over 2000 posts look in the MM you'll get a much better deal off there ;)

Obviously no one knows, but maxing BF3..... wait and see.

I wont be too disapointed if it cant. Its still going to be at such a high IQ its going to look great.

So far, my 5870 has matched more powerful cards in most games and in games its struggled, it has managed the same settings as more powerful cards.

EG Metro 2033. Yea it struggled, but I played the game in 1920x1200 all max, but no DOF and no MSAA (AAA used in stead) even more powerful cards, played at the same settings)

So thats its capabilities.

I think ATI shot themselves in the foot with the 5870 as its about 1.5(?) yrs old and still competing with most of their new cards ! At stock its about 6950 performance for £50 less

I was getting 6900 series envy, but when I took my card out yesterday and saw how massive it is, I'v fallen in love again.

Its a great card, and at £150 its a good buy.
