Apologies for another forum topic on this when there’s load around.
I have a few questions and felt it was best to start my own thread then hijack someone else’s.

I see lots of you recommend this monitor, and from what I’ve read and seen it's very good. I would love to get this monitor, but i have a few questions and concerns first.

1) I understand this isn’t the best of monitors for gaming. I will be doing some game play. Sims 3, Diablo 3 when it's realised and also I’ve got Crysis and might play a wide collection of games, fps, racing games ,rpgs, etc. etc.
How bad/good is this monitor for gaming? I read in a review that the monitor can only handle 24 fps... so if i was running Crysis at 50 fps it would only show up as 24?

2) Is the ghosting bad? I don’t even know what this is but seen lots mention it^^ As long as my game is playable and looks nice that’s all that’s important to me, also i will use it for watching dvd's, web browse etc. A bit of everything really.

3) Is the 21inch version good as well?

4) How do I connect my HDMI? My gfx card has a mini display port. Can i use a mini display port cable to hook up to the monitor for video and audio? Am I loosing image quality because there’s no HDMI?

5) Is the dell ST2320L not as good? http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=uk&l=en&sku=447081

6) What monitor would you recommend instead of the Dell for the same price +/- £10 and no larger than 23".

Thanks for your time and help. Please understand I’m no expert on monitors and never had such a fancy monitor because so anything is going to look great to me.

Hi there,

I haven't got one myself, but I have used the earlier version (the 2209WA) extensively and I know a lot of people who have one. So here are my answers as best as I can provide:

1) This monitor really is pretty good for gaming - there are certainly better monitors for gaming but unless you are uses to 120Hz or CRT type screens then you should find the U2311H great for games and the superior image quality and viewing angles provided by the E-IPS panel really add something.

As for the monitor only handling 24FPS, I'm not sure what you mean. This monitor has a refresh rate of 60Hz, and if your PC can constantly provide 60FPS or more in a game then turn Vsync on and it will run exactly at 60FPS. Perhaps this reviewer was talking about a video - as most movies are only shot at 24FPS. Do you have a link to this review and I can clarify it better?

2) I will let others who have the monitor in front of them tell you about how it plays games. But please bear in mind that is one of the most responsive non-TN monitors you can find and for the kind of games you mention playing, ghosting should not be a problem with this monitor. Here is a good review which talks about responsiveness and gaming with the U2311H.

3) It seems to be in a similar in most things to the U2311H, but looking at this review ghosting seems to be a bit worse. Considering the U2211H costs about the same as the U2311H now I would strongly suggest going for the 23in version.

4) You can connect it up to HDMI using this cable or mini-Display Port using a mini-DP to full size DP (male-male) cable. However, your graphic card should have a DVI port and the U2311H comes with a DVI-D cable - so I would suggest just using this. There is no image quality difference between DVI, HDMI or DP.

5) That Dell you linked to uses a TN panel (instead of an E-IPS panel in the U2311H) - here is some more information on the different panel types. It also isn't one of the ultrasharp range, so you don't get the premium panel warranty and the stand isn't nearly as good.

6) At it's price range there isn't anything better than the U2311H for your uses IMHO. You could go for a 120Hz TN panel monitor like this, but based on your uses you may not find the 120Hz a massive benefit and the image quality and viewing angles are a step down from the U2311H.

I had the choice recently of a 120hz TN panel or the U2311H for gaming and I went with the U2311H. The picture quality on the monitor is absolutely staggering and put side by side with my dads LG 22inch TN panel, the difference is light night and day. I play a lot of games from FPS to strategy etc and I'm chuffed to bits with the purchase. No noticable ghosting and the monitor has a gaming mode on it which improves things slightly (via the menu)

I pulled the trigger on this dell 23 inch monitor recently,as i play a lot of fps games i was a bit undecided,I am so glad i took the chance,i was blown away by the picture quality compared to my Samsung 226bw.

The stand on the dell is awesome, full range of adjustments available compared to the cheaper TN panels.I am slowly getting used to the 6.9 ratio, its okay prefer 6.10 to be honest, but its no deal breaker.

On to playing games, crysis looks fantastic ,i honestly cant see any ghosting or smearing, witcher 2 has left me staggered by the quality and i can assure you i am getting more than 24 frames.Metro no problems at all, best purchase i have made for a while now, this and the gtx 580 ..

Thanks all.
I think i will go for this monitor. It looks fantastic and there's so many positive reviews on it and i'm sure I wont regret the purchase.

When i buy the monitor is there anything i should look out for? I heard people mention backlight bleeding? If it has this does it mean its bad and i should replace it?

Is the picture quality that better only on games or is this also applicable to stuff like general browsing and watching movie files/video online?

I was planning on getting the one of the new Samsungs like the PX2370 just cause its so visually stunning and they are usually great screens but i can feel myself swaying. Is this screen that much superior? I also wanted 24' which is why Samsung is still winning

cheers

I use mine in the office, so it's usual browsing, office, VM's etc and it's a very good screen and I don't notice that it's small than my Dell 2407 at home. It's a good screen and the Dell warranty makes it a no brainer in my opinion.

i know this isn't important to most people but how does the actual design of the monitor look when its in front of you? It's looks pretty dull in the pictures, especially compared to the Samsungs?

thanks

ps: i know its all about the picture quality but still

Compared to the samsung you mentioned - the dell's image is less vibrant, mainly due to the use of standard CCFL backlighting instead of LED. However, the Dell's colours are more accurate and the viewing angkes are much larger - this means that when looking at the dell dead-on you won't see any colour banding at the sides of the screen or colours shifting when you move your head slightly (both of which you do get with a TN panel monitor like the samsung). The better image quality is nice to have in games, but it really excels in applications like video watching and internet browsing as the colours are so accurate.

As for asethetics - the Dell can be described as basic or utilitarian - the bezel is just square matte black plastic. However, in use this means all your attention is on the panel not the surroundings. Also, when discussing design I should note that the stand is fantastic. It allows height adjustment, tilt, swivel and also rotates to portrait mode (great for text).

Here is a visual comparison of a 23 and 24in 16:9 panel.

Does it really what the design looks like? No one is ever going to see my monitor, unless you're the type that like to post your setup all over the internet.

I would rather have this over the samsung. I'm waiting for my u2311h to arrive, got it brand new for £165.
