I know the galaxy isn't out yet but is there enough information available to make an educated decision?

What are the pros and cons of each device?

Here we go again... again. :p

The Samsung uses a Tegra 2, so the iPad wins by default.

(No fancy media capabilities like the Samsung Galaxy S2, wait until Tegra 3/Exynos etc before considering a straight cut Android tab)

A few people in my office went to the Google IO conference and so have a Samsung Tab 10.1.

It's undoubtedly the best Android tablet yet, so it all depends on whether you're a fan of Android or not.

^ I think Pike wanted replies, not a empty thread ;) (mobiles is the most active section for tablets)

What do you want it for?

Brief run down.

Hardware.
Screen: Samsung (It's close but the higher resolution PLS type wins)
SoC: iPad 2 (New A5 whoops the old Tegra 2 in every department)
Everything else: Tie (Just as thin, well built as each other)

Software.
OS: Tie (iOS = stable app platform, Honeycomb = promising OS with loads of features)
3rd party Software: iPad 2 (mature market with lots of exclusive content but there's enough to keep Honeycomb users happy)
Media capabilities: Tie (The Tab is limited by hardware, iPad by software. E.g. the iPad 2 could play 1080p flash content but can't, the Samsung should play 1080p flash content but can't :D Normal vids are limited to 720p or low quality 1080p on both)

What do you want it for? My biggest factor was android didn't have an iTunes equivalent. Meaning there's no legal way to obtain media for google and of course app support. Android is severly lacking in the free appsbylarge multinational companies. Banks, shops, phone providers those sort of companies which people can't really make third party apps. Samsung galaxy is slightly different it has a media store, but it is only compatible on a few samsung devices so overly drm restrictive and so pretty useless.

Can you download images from a digital camera directly to the Tab? I know the iPad supports it through a usb dongle.

Galaxy Tabs look really nice, but the question is down to usability with the software, and as much as we all waffle about ipad vs. the world, 3.0 isn't there yet. The Xoom is a shining example of a piece of hardware with no capable software.

Also the Imagination Technologies' PowerVR SGX 543MP2 gpu is by far more powerful than Tegra 2, only Sony's NGP beats it with 4 cores compared to iPad 2's 2 core GPU, its a stonka of a GPU.

If the tab was priced lower then maybe it'd be worth it, you wouldn't have to do any movie converting, just slap on whatever format, but games wise there isn't much to choose from in 3.0 iirc.

^ The Xoom's hardware is average at best, only slightly better than the sub £200 Vega tbh. The Asus Transformer shows how useful a OS like honeycomb can be ;)
(Oh and ARMs Mali 400 gpu gets surprisingly close to the 543MP2, shame Samsung can't use Exynos for Honeycomb tabs :()

Yep, 3.1 brings tons of peripheral connections, like xbox 360 controllers etc (Cordy looks fun with that :))

Surely Ipad wins purely because of the price and Android Tablets are still in there infancy?
Maybe 12-18 months it would be a more interesting debate

I went around town comparing my phone to various tablets. I concluded the android tablets are not worth it at the moment unless its much cheaper. Also the ipad 2 loaded web pages slower than my phone so not quite there yet! At moment a tablet feels like an add on extra rather than a replacement for a decent netbook.

Going to go down the iPad route then.

Are apps bought for the iPhone compatible with the iPad?

Yes, some are specific to each platform and some are universal and work on both, a + next to the install icon in itunes shows you its a universal.

Apps written for phone will still work on pad, but will be the same size as iphone screen, but there will be a '2x' button on pad to pixel double them to ipad size.

Got tired of waiting for a decent Android tablet to go with my HTC Desire and stumped up for the IPad2, despite disliking Apple as a company for as long as I can remember. Don't regret the decision. Hardly miss the lack of Flash. Apps maketh the tablet, and there is no comparison (and won't be for a good long time, if ever).

Be careful when getting apps, IPad compatible does not mean IPad optimised.

Well I have no use/desire for a tablet but as you say this will be an interesting debate in 12/18 months as industry pundits are predicting that as with phones Android will dominate the market in the next few years.

They'll need to undercut the pricing of the iPad considerably if they want to successfully permeate the tablet market the same way they've done with the smartphone one, with dozens of models being churned out monthly from cheap to flagship.
