6990 and 6950 trifire or triple 6950's

3x 6970's would technically give you the best performance.. but in my opinion it is more practical to do a 6990 and a 6970 in trifire

AMD Radeon 6990+6970 CrossFireX / "TriFire" Review

At HardOCP we focus on giving you advice about value and getting you the most for your hard earned dollar. As enthusiasts ourselves, and gamers at heart, we have to suggest AMD's TriFire for providing the best gaming experience we have ever had. AMD TriFire has given us unrivaled gaming performance. Radeon HD 6990 + 6970 TriFire gives us 2GB of RAM per GPU so we can actually use the shader performance provided to improve image quality, and it gives us room to tinker and overclock for even more performance. AMD currently reigns king in the world of dual card gaming performance. Take a knee....again NVIDIA.

Thanks

the board is Asrock Z68 Extreme4, i have 2 6950's at the min but i also have a NZXT phantom cace that can only hold 2 large cards.. so its a case of selling the case and getting a 3rd 6950 and a corsair 700d case.. or keep the case and get a 6990 and sell the othe 6950.. never easy is it.

If you go with three 6950's you're going to need a case with 8 expansion slots as on the Z68 Extreme4 the third card will fit in the 7th expansion slot space and overhang the bottom of the motherboard where an 8th slot would be.

You'll also need a case with planty of space between the bottom of the motherboard and the PSU to allow for the overhanging card.

The third card will also likely block the connectors along the bottom edge of the motherboard.

From a financial perspective 6990 £430-£140 (say) for your 6950 = a cost of £290.

A third 6950 will cost around £200-£210.

Thanks for the reply, i was thinking the 3rd card will block off the connector slots, is there anyway around this?

It would be on the desk at the side of the Phase :) as for dusting just take it outside and blow it off with the airline :) well thats what i do!

I love that case Phase... put in a shelf where you'd definitely not spill anything on it and it would be awesome... just not practical for lans and stuff

@ OP, I would suggest a 6990+6970. Less space, better cooling. Just put your 6990 in the second slot. I haven't done this but others suggest it is easier when disabling crossfire

Good luck!
