Hi there, I recently bought a new car it has mot and tax till the 30th june and I am away from monday till the 8th of july so the mot and tax will expire while I am away. Is there anything I need to do before I go away? Notice for sorn or something? The car will be sat on the drive so won't be on the road.

Thanks Phil

can you not get an mot appointment beforehand? if it fails for something minor, it won't invalidate your current mot. Its a newish car so it should pass straight away.

Then you can order your tax disc online and all will be fine.

Technically, you can be fined, practically they usually give a 28 day grace period before they actually do anything. So it's unlikely to matter provided you sort it as soon as you get back.

Is there a reason you can't get it done before you go? Or get a mate/family member to MOT it, and then pay for the tax disc online?

it is insured, I am just flat out at the moment running around arranging things before I go off to florida. It should pass it's a 03 plate seat leon cupra r, never failed before. I just can't get it in anywhere before I go. So do I need to sorn it?

Yes it will. If it fails an MOT, no matter if you book it so it overlaps your previous one, if it fails it's deemed to be unroadworthy and makes your existing MOT null and void.

No it does not.
The only way your car can have it's MOT made "null and void" is if the car fails on a dangerous issue and is prohibited.
This is rather rare - but possible.

If you take your car in a month before your MOT is due to expire and it fails, you still have the month on your old MOT which remains in place.

wrong. Only if its some apocalypticly bad, like completely bald tyres or missing a mirror, then the mot would be invalidated.

I know, I've done it before. The whole point of the system is so that you have time to get your car/van up to scratch while you can.

Well it went straight through the MOT without any issues so I will just tax it the day I get back from holiday or order online so it's here when I get back! Thanks anyway!

Anyway while in florida I had planned to come back 8th july but I have decided to stay till the end of my visa till the end august so I just sorned the car till I get back it's still insured and sat on my driveway is that ok? I won't get a ticket for it or anything as my dad seemed to think there was a new law out meaning I couldn't do that?

Thanks Phil!
