Hey guys, first time posting here.

I'm having a bit of a problem with my CPU cooling, under a heavy load such as GTA 4 my CPU temp can reach upto 80c, idle temp is around 56-60c.

I've read online that anything above 60c for CPU temp is dangerous for my hardware, so I'm thinking of buying a new CPU cooler however I don't have a lot of money right now something in the range of £20-£40 would suit.

Problem is I dont know what coolers will fit on my Q6600, someone mentioned a Zalman and I think it was Thermalite but I'm not sure, could somebody help me out here, appreciate it.

EDIT: Thought I would mention that all 4 cores idle at around 60c and around 78c under heavy load, will new cooling lower these temps aswell as my CPU temp?

Hello :)

First of all can you list your PC hardware as that will make things easier.

Is Q6600 at stock speed of 2.4GHz or overclocked? Also is it B3 or G0 revision?

Q6600 can easily take 70-75C but that scenario only occurs when you are running extremely stressful stress test program such as intel burn test.

Getting higher idle temps seem to suggest that either your heatsink isn't mounted correctly onto Q6600, the contact between heatsink and Q6600 is very poor or the heatsink itself is rubbish.

Ok my pc hardware is:

550 HiperWatt PSU
GTS 250 1GB
Q6600 at stock 2.4ghz
3GB DDR2 RAM
Windows Vista 32bit

The temps seem to reach almost 80c on most games sometimes a little bit less like on CoD4 it will be around 75c, it's always higher then my card temp.

The heatsink and stuff I don't know about but when I had to replace my mobo the guy said I needed a new CPU cooler and reccomended one to me, it was only £10 so this is probably the culprit.

How do I know if it's a B3 or a G0?

If that's at stock and you're getting those temps it's almost certainly a badly seated heatsink.

Other possible, but far less likely culprits:

- From a failed overclock you've got frequencies at normal but an increase voltage
- Your heatsink is fine but your paste is buggered
- Your fan has died.

Mine idles at 36c @ 2.7GHz, I have an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Rev.2, it's very good value for the money. Never seen it hit 60c yet.

Download cpu-z that will tell you the revision and also which case do you have as that might be adding to the heat issues.
And also make sure to use coretemp or realtemp to see temperatures.

The fan is working but I wouldnt know how to replace heatsink or paste, havn't got a clue, I just want to buy a new cooler that will fit and bring those temps down.

Use CPU-Z for finding out whether it is B3 or G0 and also displays your other settings such as voltages, clock speeds, your memory size/speed, motherboard make, bios revision, graphics card etc. This program is must.

Use Core temp for displaying the temperatures of the Q6600 cores and this program is the most accurate compared to speedfan etc.

The other program is Real Temp and is same as coretemp. Using CoreTemp you can also tell us what is the VID of your Q6600 or the stock voltage as it is known as.

What motherboard are you also using?

Edit: beaten to it

Done that, the revision is G0. My case is the same standard pc case i got years ago from PC World.

My mobo isn't the best ASRock G41M-GS Just download Core Temp and not liking what I see it's reporting idle temps of 66c 61c 69c 70c, seem 10c higher then speedfan reports.

Yeah because coretemp is directly reporting the temperatures of cores and this is what we are interested in. Speedfan displays the cpu overall temperature which is lower than core temperatures.

Toasty, my q6600 is oc'd and is idling at 36 under a h50, and 1.336v under load doesnt get much higher than 40's.

It does sound like a bad contact with the chip. It is really easy to replace the paste, so dont worry about that. what sort of case and other cooling do you have (other fans, etc)

btw.. is there a possibility that the temp detectors could be flawed? U have the corsiar h50 and when I increase the pump speed, (theoretically allowing better cooling performance), the stated temps run at 5 degrees higher.. :S

I don't really have any cooling apart from a crappy fan a friend gave me, which I've mounted onto the vent at the side of the case to push air out, doesnt seem to do much though.

My case is really standard I wouldn't know what to call it.
