Been using my W7 machine to stream to the media centre side of our xbox360 for a couple of years now, but in the last month something has gone "bad".

Instead of a half second delay between clicking the button and the system responding, it's more like 5-6 minutes.

In the same time span my pc becomes unusable, juddering mouse, no responce to clicks, etc. According to task manager my ram use jumps from 1.5gig to 3.9gig in the space of a minute, task manger shows that windows defender is background (msmpeng.exe) scanning hundreds of files, even though i've not got a scheduled scan running.

Hard to get exact details from different pages as things just stop responding for a few minutes.

Task manager will show a drop back to normal ram use and about a minute later the video will start playing on the xbox.

Don't know if it's related, but often when trying to watch something on the pc itself i hear the hard drives spinning up as if they'd been put to sleep, don't know if that would be related.

System is Q6600, 4gig of pc2-6400, P5B-Deluxe.

Any ideas?

Have you tried disabling windows defender / Microsoft security essentials to see if it helps?

Uninstalled MSE & Divx player (left divx codec in for MKV streaming), still getting slowdowns.

Saw something odd on the resource monitor, the eshell.exe (media center) was reading two files, one gi-huge bruray rip and the the piddly little 700mb video i'd actually requested.

Also my C drive had 100% activity, but the source of the video files was only showing 3-4% activity. Is something odd trashing my harddrive?

I have noticed this too since the last batch of updates were rolled out for windows 7.

CPU usage goes through the roof on wmpnetwk.exe. I shall keep an eye on eshell.exe next time I use my 360.

It is crazy because before the updates it was fine :(

After a complete removal of all codecs and a reboot everything was back to full speed.
Installed k-like codecs, still fine, install divx and it's back to being a bag of **** again, xbox browser won't load thumbnails, won't respond to the controller, etc

So i've got a choice of a working media centre or HD ability :(

Tried using The Shark007 codec pack rather than the K-Lite and DivX?

I've never had a problem streaming using just the Shark007's pack.

I'll give that a go thanks, i ditched the divx pack and the system sprang back into life, missing my HD :(

You don't need any codecs at all if you play content in VLC.

I posted and editted what I wrote within about 15 seconds to clarify my point further as people would have misunderstood it (which you did). Not my problem if you read threads with subscription emails :p

Tried it before the divx thing was around, always had buffering issues with HD stuff, watch 10 seconds, buffer for 20, watch 10, etc.
