1m for sale...

135i that's raided the M3 parts bin

Still, I'd love one

It's no doubt a very competent and quick car but I was disappointed with the one I drove - it may have just been a personal thing but others have agreed with me. Not what I was expecting.

Lot of money, too!

Yeah it is, what with most of the chassis being one and the identical lap times for them both in evo.

oh dear. The comparisons between a car go far far beyound it's "capabilities". The quality of the one series is poor, and I don't see this really being any different. Of course, we all drive round the Ring on our way to work, reading EVO. :p

It depends what you are expecting really - with cars, you generally need to have a realistic threshold of 'quality expectations' and anything above that is a winner.

Simple things like solid and precise clutch, smooth power delivery and accurate steering make/break cars for me.

Squashy on/off clutches which are imprecise really do my nut much like slack floaty steering where there is a sense that the car weighs absolutely nothing.

That car is £45k on BMW's configurator and IIRC there is no VAT in Guernsey. So that would have cost him under £38k if that's correct. nice little mark up!

He was probably suckered into paying extra on 'exclusivity' grounds. (read: Zero negotiation skills).

What on Earth would make you say that the 1-series quality is poor?

It shared the majority of it's underlying components and high-end engines with the 3-series; by connection you are therefore saying that the 3-series is poor quality?

I am speechless that you would call perhaps the joint-top mainstream premium car manufacturer 'poor quality'!!

You either have exceptionally high standards or are just spouting armchair rubbish...

Due to the value, whoever buys it will have to pay the VAT if they import it to the UK though.

He's talking about the level of perceived quality in the car, ie how the interior feels, etc etc.

As the entry level into the BMW range the 1 Series has the least amount of perceived quality. It doesnt feel as well made as the 3 Series. But in exactly the same way, the 3 Series doesnt feel as well made as the 5 Series, etc etc.

It's no revelation really, you wouldnt expect the cheapest car in the range (Remember, the base car is the same) to offer the same levels of quality as the more expensive ones.

As a BMW owner himself I'd imagine he has driven numerous 1 Series loan cars so therefore is quite well placed to impartially judge the quality of the car.

This, bang on.

Don't for a second think we in the Channel Islands get 20% off list price on the same car in the UK.

For starters the list is never dropped by that amount.
Secondly we pay GST in Jersey at 5% on purchase cost of the car

Deleted - nevermind. Actually read the ad :D

It will be registered. It would be on trade plates otherwise.

Ninja Edit - It could be on trade plates still. Gsy runs a different system. Jersey has Red plates with white text unlike Gsy which is:

"Much like trade plates in the UK, Guernsey used to have a system whereby the trade plate was issued with a Z prefix, i.e. Z18. This seems to have been replaced with a V prefix, i.e. V18 now."

WTF? I was born in Jersey and next door neighbour lives there (They have 2 homes) Im lost on teh red plates in Jersey?

How naive of me to compared the performance characteristics of 2 performance cars, really silly of me. Of course, we all drive around with a chubby on our way to work over how many soft touch plastics we have infront of us :p, I suppose you have to think of things like that when a car has no other redeeming features.

Using your logic why buy a Mercedes S Class, just get an A Class and stop having a chubby on about the plastics.

But you are right, an M3 has no redeeming features bar the quality of its interior.
