Cooling info for a Q6600 please.

Does the heatsink move about when pushing or pulling it slightly?

Does the intel stock fan sucks or blow away the air from the heatsink? If it blows away, then the side fan needs to be pulling air out of the case. If stock fan is sucking air then side fan needs to suck air in aswell.

However with the latter setup, you are just warming up the airflow inside the case and this may well also lead to higher temperature inside the case.

Well I'll buy a case next after I get this new cooler, I'm going to order that cooler tomorrow so I'll be removing that daft fan to accomodate it, will it definately fit on my processor?

I'll also give my PC a good clean out tonight.

The CPU cooler seems firmly attached, cant move it around at all.

Those Intel coolers push air over the HS so it want a fan blowing air onto it. The PSU will be your exhaust fan.

At the minute the fan on the side does seem to be blowing air onto the CPU cooler and I can't really feel much air coming from the CPU fan, so I assume thats sucking air in.

When you remove your old cooler, take pictures of the bottom of cooler heatsink base and also top surface of Q6600. I would like to know if there was any thermal compound and how did it look like after you took off your cooler.

I wouldn't be again surprised if a safety plastic was still stuck to the bottom of the heatsink base though I suspect not.

It happened to another fellow ocuk member where he or his relatives/friends bought an i7 OEM PC and it turned out upon inspecting CPU-Z that voltage going through i7 was around 1.6V :eek:

That's why it is best to build one's own PC after one has learnt about it. So if any problem occurs then forums like these are best source of free helping info and are 100 times better than the customer support service of the like of PC World where it may well take weeks to sort out a problem. Just my 2cents

Sure I can do that, I wont know what I'm looking at like I still don't know what a heatsink is but I'll take a few of the backside of cooler.

Yeah I'm definately building my own rig next time I've had too many problems with this one.

I think I'm going to have a problem getting the cooler off, there is 4 plastic screws atached to the cooler, once I turn them the whole cooler comes loose but there is still something holding it on.

Will I have to take out the entire motherboard to get this thing off?

If so I don't think I will risk it, maybe take it to a shop and have it done for me.

Made a thread similar to this, and just found it bloody weird you have an identical case and cpu to me, with an identical problem.

I'm having the exact same problem as you, maybe it's a fault from the point of view of the case.
I'm probably wrong, just seems strange.

Heh, weird indeed.

I've ordered my new cooler it should arrive monday so I'm gonna install that and see if it helps.

Hopefully I can pull off the cooler like this guy in video below.

It should come straight off, with a small amount of oomph, due to the tim.

When I take the cooler off, there will be thermal paste on the processor wont they?, so do I have to remove that stuff or just put the new cooler on top of the old paste?

I havn't ordered new thermal paste so I need to know this before I attempt it.

Remove it with some isopropyl alcohol or ArctiClean/AKASA TIM Clean etc they all do the job.

Yes you would need some new thermal paste, and what you do is make a small blob in the middle of the processor and spread it using a thin piece of plastic you dont care about (e.g. those stupid credit card sized loyalty cards etc.).

And for removing thermal compound, you don't need anything special. I just use vodka..

I've never used that paste, but from the reviews it seems superb.
And yeah, any household item with a high alcohol content that is not viscous (like nail varnish remover) can be used.

It's really very simple. With the ArctiClean, I just use kitchen towel, a few drops of each and just wipe the top clean.

Have a look at these to give you an idea:

Then with the new thermal paste, I always put a blob in the middle about the size of a small pea. Don't worry about spreading it.

Edit: Acrtic Silver 5 paste is good.

EDIT:

Because of the bank holiday monday the mail service has messed up, it should have arrived today (tuesday 31st) but it hasnt, I phoned the office and they said it will be here tomorrow.

So I'll update this thread with new pictures tomorrow as requested.

Well it didn't turn up again. it's 3 days late now, not very good for my first order off overclockers... paid for next day delivery and this is happening.

I don't know whats going on with this mail service, it still has not arrived and when I phone them they can't track it, said it might be waiting to be delivered because it's classed as valuable, they havn't even sent me that card to say I can pick it up its been almost a week since I ordered it.

That's Royal Mail for you I guess, it's just a waiting game for now.

My computer seems to be holding up but I havn't attempted playing any games since I idle at 75c, I would probably go upto 95c or more.

I did try to broadcast on Veetle last night but that didn't go well I was seeing 101c 97c 90c 85c so I really can't do much with it for the moment. Here is a screenshot: http://picturepush.com/public/5780678

I've just ordered a new case its a zalman z9 plus it was the last one in stock so I'm happy I found it.

I also cleaned my PC with a paint brush as suggested earlier in this thread and my temps dropped by about 10c, I really cleaned all the cpu cooler it's looking good. I still don't think I can stress it out too much but when my new case + cooler arrives I should be gettin great temps.

Max I've seen my cores at is 89c since the clean out.
