hi guys,
just got back of a break, i went to turn on pc and it wouldn,t get past the windows splash screen, also the gpu (HD5850) fan was making a hell of a racket:confused:

opened up pc and i could see a sticky substance on the hsf and gpu:eek:
i removed the gpu and checked it out and it was coffee
my case has holes on top for fans and someone had spilled coffee and it had dribbled down the holes through the hsf and onto the gpu:mad:

i took the gpu apart (my first time ever) and there was a sticky residue over about half of it
i got a damp towel and kept dabbing at it until all the residue was gone.
i put some mx-4 on the gpu and reassembled it.
also cleaned out the cooler (nh-d14)
there was no other splashes any where else, so i was lucky:D

i then left it for 24hrs and then refitted it.
windows loaded up now problem :) and i ran furmark on it for 30mins with no problems :)
the only problem is the fan is making more noise than it did before.
is there a way to fix this? or is it better to leave it alone? as i can live with it
also would you say the gpu is ok now?

The room might smell of coffee when the PC gets warmed up, unless you cleaned it extremely throroughly :P

If you ran furmark for 30 mins without issue, you neednt worry

Possibility there could be a bit of residue left over somewhere on the circuit board which is causing the fan to malfunction slightly. You can actually get foaming circuit board cleaner you spray it on leave fore a few minutes then rinse it off and dry it for a minimum of 24 hours in a airing cupboard, some people put it in a carrier bag and heat it up with a hairdryer and the moisture is drawn to the bag. Some tutorials on youtube about doing it and you just have to have confidence it's still going to work after cleaning.

Are your monitoring programmes still showing the same fan speed as before the accident?

The fan rotor could have taken a bit of moisture and is now struggling over a bit of corrosion. You could try removing the fan and inspecting the damage, cleaning as appropriate. You may find as time progresses the problem will cure itself as it wears away any proud parts.

Noise has a tendency to wear at your nerves so something you can live with right now may be something that causes your teeth to itch a month down the line, by which time damage could have been done.

Did you find the culprit ?
no, i have 3 teenage kids, and they are all denying it, but i will find out;)

Are your monitoring programmes still showing the same fan speed as before the accident?

yep still the same, and with slightly lower temps (must be mx-4)

as moomoo said, if it can run 30 mins of furmark then it should be ok, but its nice to get feedback from others :)
thanks everyone

The best thing I have found to use for PCB cleaning is IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol).

It will dissolve/remove pretty much anything that is spilled onto a PCB. It dries quickly, and leaves no residue. Better than using water, IMO.

lol, i was tempted,
but i have my suspicions, one of them is very helpull all of a sudden.
i am thinking guilty conscience ;)

i am just glad no long term damage was done (said with fingers crossed ;))

Should have told them the pc had died and you'd lost all the family photos and some super important documents. Then they'd be helpful forever :P
