Hi all

Just built a new house with CAT 6 in all the rooms and one nice big server for all content, Pics, Music Etc.

Need to buy something that will play Blue Ray DVD's and also let me access my network stuff.

Would i be better off with the PS3 or the Apple Tv and a normal Blue Ray Player?

What would you do and why?

P.S Music will be stored on Itunes. Not sure how i will be putting my DVD stuff on the pc/mac yet...

(Ignore the fact that the PS3 can play games).

If I had a decent budget, and it sounds like you might have then i'd go down the HTPC route.

I used to swear by the PS3 as a media player but the recent Cinavia DRM has put me right off and i'm now thinking of selling it and getting a WDTV box.

(That's if you want to stream movies over the network!)

Ohh and where was the build log for the house? Pics are required :)

To go to that much effort and not compliment it with a proper HTPC running XBMC would be a real shame I think.

XBMC

Bliss.

get a PS3 too.

Guys, i may get a HTPC of some sort at some point but at the moment just want a DVD/Blue Ray player....

So shall i just buy a Blue Ray player or fork out the extra £100 and get a PS3.

Will the PS3 not do at least some of a HTPC work?

Get a PS3 mate, it will do what you need it to do, plus you have a games console. Throw bbc iplayer on it, itv player and 4 on demand and it's all good

PS3 is good for most stuff unless you start running mkv's which you then need to either recode or have a PC running as a media server converting + the new Cinavia DRM which has started popping up is turning into a pain as no easy way to get around it on the ps3 atm.

I would look at possibly looking at building a HTPC based around a AMD Fusion Chipset with a blueray player in it with xmbc or boxee running on it should play everything + software upgradability down the line.

You can get a stand alone blueray player that will hook upto your network (Know LG do one at least) and play your content from your server but this could in the long run fall foul to Cinavia DRM as well through a firmware update (as with PS3), as a lot of manufaturers are being pressured into adding it to their products.

HTPC is always the most versatile option, ive had one for a number of years and it has always served my needs perfectly, other things come and go.
