Why WERE computers that hideous beige? Was it just the colour of the plastic, or did someone genuinely make a design decision and choose that awful travesty of a shade?

Computers started out mostly in business/educational use, research labs, banks, etc. where it didn't really matter what they looked like. Once they became more commonly used in the home then a shift started in the aesthetics.

15-16 years ago, white was the norm and at that time black was the exception.

However now it seems black is the dominant colour for PC cases.

My favourite PC Case colour is also black.

But I would like to know when the interest in white was shifted to black?

You just reminded me about the clear plastic/perspex cases, and how bad they would look after not being cleaned for some time.

They were a fad that didn't last to long.

Black for a case. If you must have colour get a case with a window and some funky coloured cable braid.

Black for me - Unpainted brushed aluminium is ok, but I'd almost always rather have a black version. Other colours on the case are not my thing at all.

Black exterior. I hate the bare aluminium interior of my a70f, hence it will be getting powdercoated in blue, with possibly a black motherboard tray.
