May sound like a dumb question but my dad is giving me his car soon so I'll be selling my current one. I will be putting mine up for sale and parking it up a driveway, if it's not going to be driven does it legally need to be insured?

Cheers!

not illegal but with the changes you will HAVE to declare it off the road while uninsured regardless of if its taxed or not

if you dont declare a SORN you will automatically be issued a fine

Yep - stored on private property needs no insurance, but as others have said, you will need to sorn it (which can be done on-line)

As above, from mid June it must be SORN'd otherwise it needs insurance even if kept on private property.

However, keep in mind that if it's SORN'd and with no insurance then potential buyers won't be able to test drive it. This obviously affects the number of buyers who could be interested (who would want to buy a car without driving it).

Cheers guys, seems like if I declare it SORN then I have to remove the tax as well? Surely that makes it a ballache to sell a second car these days as whoever buys it will need to sort out taxing it before they drive it away

If the tax on it is like £30 then might as well leave it on there, will be more attractive to the buyer.

Can always add the tax value to the sale price to recoup your losses too.

Right!

Thought that you had to send the tax disc back, dim lightbulb moment :)
I'm pretty sure you do if you SORN it. Sounds like it may be best to SORN the new car and keep using the old one until you sell it, that way you can keep it insured and taxed.
