Its been awhile since I last built a computer and would like some advice for this build as im spending a lot of money and know ive gone wrong somewhere. Main aim is to use it for my Microsoft Certs so hence HDD and memory for virtual machines etc and no graphics card apart from onboard. When I get back into gaming I will buy x2 beasty graphics cards.

Also any recommendations on psu size/make?
  • Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM

  • Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
  • OCZ Agility 3 60GB 2.5" SATA-3 Solid State Hard Drive (AGT3-25SAT3-60G) x2 plan to raid 0 them and use half a ssd cache and win7 os
  • Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9) x2

That colour is possibly the hardest colour to try and read!!! lol (with the black OcUK theme anyway)

Also, all of your links go to the forum homepage lol (think you need to change "forums" to "www")

Everything there is compatible and looks good (assuming you chose the cooler more for noise rather than performance lol)

I would imagine thermal compound comes pre-applied (don't quote me on that lol) but if you do want extra stuff I'd suggest MX-4 as it's non-conductive and arguably better anyway.

Finally, as I said, rest looks good:)

Edit: Oh and OEM CPU has only 1 year warranty vs retail 3 years and retail comes with stock cooler should you ever wanna sell it on or something could come in use. Just a suggestion anywho....

Nice monitors but you could get a couple of 24" monitors for the same price and still play at 1920x1080.

If you're going to use a SSD for cacheing, 30GB will probably be more than enough for that particular drive.

You need a couple of fans with the HR-02 and the size of it may conflict with your corsair vengeance as well. I'd either go for lower profile RAM or get a smaller CPU cooler. Maybe even an all-in-one water cooler like the H70 or Antec 920.

What possessed you to pick that colour? I've got the black theme and I still can't read it so the blue theme must be a joke!

Agility 3's are getting a lot of DOA's at the moment and corsair just brought out their new ones which are almost identical and cheaper. Samsung spinpot F3's are also faster hard drives AFAIK so might want to raid 5 them instead.

Also there are a lot of cases out around that price point which are very decent. So unless you have already checked out the other possibilities I would suggest you do so. Is still a decent case though if the styling is to your fancy.

MX-2 as well imo.

I didn't do that out manually, I have a firefox addon called foxreplace that funds and replaces words.

This should make it clearer.

Sorry about the font/links. Simply cntl+v on the links from the basket! my bad but fixed now..

Thanks for the suggestions, im going to change the following

  • HDD's will be changed to Samsung spinpot F3's
  • MX-2 instead of AS5
  • SSD will go with corsair simply because of the DOA rumours
  • Retail version of CPU
  • DVD drive added to the list.
Ill revist the screen size suggestions but I really feel i need two screens so i can run a vm in each one or even learning material open on one screen and a vm running on the other.

Im not that keen on the case listed above but im not that keen on any of the OcUK cases...but dont want to shop anywhere else!

Anyone have any psu and cpu fan recommendations? with all the kit i know i would need a big one and plus the fact i might want to put two graphics cards in the beast for gaming in the future. So 800w-1000w?

I just dislike needless waste, have no problem with spending 1400 if its going to show reasonable improvement.

Corsair 650d, a brilliant case and I use one at the moment - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-036-CS&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=

The raven series of silverstone are exceptional coolers and really have an edge about them, though it is big - RV03- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-075-SV&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=

RV02 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-065-SV&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=

HAF X - One of the best cooling cases around, brilliant for SLi or CF http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-203-CM&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=

Lower HAF case - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-237-CM&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=

Then of course there are the Lian-li cases where there are several around your budget, they make exceptional cases.

Depending on what case you get you might want modular or non modular PSU. That means if its modular you can take out the cables from the psu so you won't have spares hanging about your case but they cost more. If your case has decent cable management you'll be fine. I've managed to hide all the cables from a corsair 950w TX in a corsair 650d and I can assure you it comes with a rediculas amount of cables.

That aside you might want to consider either the XFX 850w core or black edition. The black edition being the modular version and slightly better, the core is still exceptionally good and is seasonic made.

Corsair TX 850w is always a good shout, the modular equiviliant is too expensive to go up against the XFX 850w black edition though.
