Im now thinking of getting the u2711 for my new build, but as the resolution is really high - at 2560x1440, would a 6950 (my planned purchase) not be good enough to run games at that resolution smoothly?

been looking at the gtx570, will that be good enough to run new and few years in the future games, smoothly at the 2711s insane res.?

thanks!

edit: budget is no mroe than a 6970 MAX, i know i stated a few times already below, but thought id post it here to make easier :) thanks.

thanks! must be all the ads on there, i guess 570 is a good shout, i might need to sli in the future... as it struggles on some games already at those res. (even the 580 does!)

Yup and definitely a 2xGPU area (sadly for the wallet lol).

2x 6950s would be probably better than 2x 570 due to the extra vram (2gb vs 1.28gb each).

With 2 gpus your still restricted to each individual cards vram capacity as each card renders alternating frames or half the same frame each etc, depending on the technology (so they both use exactly the same textures each, so only 2gb of vram instead of 4gb for xfire for example)

If you really are set on nvidia, your probably looking at a 3gb 580GTX which retail at around £450, so still not exactly cheap. Especially when you can get 6950 xfire for that price

overkill

i use 2560x1600 and tbh sli gtx 480's are more than enough

one thing to note is most reviews say 80fps on bfbc2 for example with sli 480's at that res and i get 180fps @ the same settings so take from that what you will

If you go for 570 SLI you will regret pretty soon. Even 480 SLI is much better a choice due to vram size.

If you are going to go multi gpu you'd be mad not to go nvidia. The fact SLI scales better than CF now days and is capable of 3d is a huge bonus. While 3d may not interest you at the moment if you are going to have that much fire power you want to have your options open.

Personally I'd say sli 480gtx. They do draw more power than sli 580 and they are louder and hotter but they have 1.5gb of ram so beat the 570 at that res by a mile and are like £300 cheaper than the 580 sli. That £300 could be put into water cooling. Or if you have a decent case get some of the custom cooler ones like the gigabyte SE/SOC version or KFA2 one etc. Will be cooler and quieter.

Just wanna pick you up on this as I don't want the OP to be mislead but that statement above is completely untrue. In fact I'd go as far as to say crossfire actually edges it nowadays. AMD have really picked up the ball as of late with multi-gpu tech and have levelled the playing field. You're statement even a year ago may well have stood true but now it doesn't. To avoid the inevitable "source?" comment here's one.

OP I'd definitely not right off AMD. In fact if memory serves (which it doesn't always) the 6 series gpu's really do close the gap on the nvidia cards at higher resolutions and it may be worth looking at reviews to see if the extra expense of an nvidia card is justified at your resolution. If you have a u2711 you won't be using 3d anyway so it really would be a case of which card/s gives you the best frames for your money. This now begs the question how much do you really want to spend?

most of the later 6950's will not flash to 6970's , so not good advice tbh

The reference ones do. Obviously if you're going to invest £400 into something, you would do a bit of research yourself before purchasing.

If you look at the bottom, very few, if any, result in errors. And if you brick the card then you just flip the switch to the old bios and you have a brand new 6950.

Looks like the 1.2gb memory really hurt the 570s when AA was added.

Yeah, one of the reasons why I never went with NVIDIA this time, 1280 seems to be what most games are demanding for max settings (At least), so to me, it doesn't make much sense buying a card that will not be able to run what I want it to run in half a year.

most of the ref design have already been sold , you will be lucky to find one as ocuk have sold out as far as i know ;) . why risk wrecking a gfx card if the flash goes wrong , it is worth saving the extra and getting a 6970 if you want a 6970 . also if you want to quote somebody why do you need to post again ? , why not edit your last post ?
