Hi all,

Been a while since I've visited.

I'm on a hunt for a new GPU to upgrade from my 4870X2, been with ATI/AMD for a good few years since my first proper gaming rig a couple of years back. Went from a 4870 to a 4870X2.

I'm now back on the market to find a new one. Ideally I want to go for a single GPU rather than Xfire or SLI as I feel drivers seem to like single cards more than multi gpu cards.

Current resolution 1920 x 1080
Spec:

1055 AMD Hexcore
4GB DDR3
256GB Crucial RealSSD C300
500GBx2 HDDs
4870X2 Asus Trifan
800W Bequiet PSU

Everything I've thrown at the PC its ran, but I think its about time I upgraded. Been playing with Witcher 2 and while Xfire is now working now and I can run it Ultra settings minus the Ubersampling I think its a good time to upgrade to give me some more power and DX11.

My question is should I go for an AMD 6970 or make a jump to Nvidia and cough up more money for the 580? I want to have it so I wont need to upgrade for another year and a bit if possible (unless some super new and shiny comes up)
I've excluded the 6990 and 590 due to the Xfire/SLI.

This is on a brilliant offer

It's serious bang for buck, you get an updated non-reference cooler which will allow you to overclock to incredible speeds quietly, it also comes with a bios switch which reduces any risk if you wish to flash the card (unlock it's shaders) to a 6970.

Thanks for the reply.
Is this guaranteed to flash correctly? I hadn't planned on getting the 6950 as I read from some threads that the flashable ones are selling out.

No card is guaranteed to flash correctly, but it is likely it will succeed. Even so, if you don't get the free shaders you'll still benefit from it's clocking capabilities.

Yeah I think guaranteed was the wrong word. I meant is this one of the cards that will flash correctly as some of the cards wont.
I hadn't really planned on overclocking, which was one of the reasons of getting the 6970. But if this card is one of the flashable cards I may consider this. I do like the cooler as I am used to this coming from the three fan 4870 currently being used :)

Sash, the new batch of Twin Frozr IIIs dont seem to flash for anyone anymore. So its safe to say that its no longer 'one of the cards that will flash correctly'.

Thanks for the confirmation :)

So my original question stands. Budget isn't really a problem, I just don't want to spend loads of money on the 580 if there isn't a huge difference from the 6970.

Edit,

They can't.

It's still a great card for the money, but if you want the little extra performance then go 6970, but after overclocking the difference won't be significant.

Don't get the Power-Version ATI 6970!

Can't go wrong.
