I've been trying to decide which phone to go for today. I was originally looking to get a HTC Wildfire for £15 a month on contract but for £5-£10 extra I could get a much better phone.

It came down to HTC Incredible S vs HTC Desire S.

From reading various sites the differences are:

Incredible S has a 8MP camera compared to the 5MP camera on the Desire S
Incredible S has a 4 inch screen compared to the 3.7 inch screen on the Desire S
Incredible S has Android 2.2 Froyo and Desire S has 2.3 Gingerbread

Apart from that I cannot see any other differences, I've been looking at contracts from Orange as they seem to be the cheapest.

HTC Incredible S - Orange - Free + £25 a month - 300 mins / unlimited texts / 500MB internet

HTC Desire S - Orange - Free + £25 a month - 300 mins / unlimited texts / 500MB internet or Orange - Free + £20 a month - 200 mins / unlimited texts / 250MB internet

So can you guys help me decide which one to go for?

Look at battery life figures, if the Desire S has a considerably better battery I would get that, having 2.3 is just icing on the cake.

I've given up caring about smartphone specs now. I just want good software.

But then there's the Samsung Galaxy S II phone which can be had for

Samsung Galaxy S 2 - O2 - Free + £24 a month - 300 mins / unlimited texts / 100MB internet

Samsung Galaxy S 2 - O2 - Free + £27 a month - 300 mins / unlimited texts / 500MB internet

Argh! Now what!

To be honest, I was thinking about getting a tablet, but I think I'll just get a top end smartphone which can do most things a tablet can.

So is the Samsung Galaxy S II the best/fastest phone out? or is the LG Optimus 2X better?

Just bumping this..

Getting a phone for my mum, and I'm tied between these two.

Both are on Orange for £25 a month. Need to be on Orange/T-Mobile because of the signal where my mum works, and she's not willing to spend more than £25 so I can't really fit the Galaxy S II into this criteria.

Which would you choose over these two? I see the Incredible S is running 2.2, but has a bigger screen and camera, and a better front and rear camera. But the Desire S is running 2.3.

If she's willing to pay £70 upfront she can get the SGS2 for £25/month on Orange from Phones4U.

I personally would pay the extra £70 in a heartbeat, it really is that much better than the Incredible/Desire S

The Incredible S will be getting 2.3 imminently (if it hasn't already) so that is a non point really. The Incredible S is definitely the one to go for.

Also, what Streeteh said above is the best option! :p

Thanks :)

I'll see what she says tomorrow. But if she's adamant she doesn't want to spend the extra £70, the Incredible S is the best next option?

She's not a tech person so would honestly not notice the difference between most android phones :p She's coming from an old samsung brick.

Having played with a Incredible S and briefly looked at a students' Desire S (who'd of thought one of the perks of being a teacher was getting to look at loads of students' phones?), the Incredible S would be a no brainer for me. It's a better phone than the Desire S in pretty much everything bar battery life (which is still acceptable). However, sorry to stereotype women, but how important is form factor? The Desire S is smaller and prettier, so if that's a deal breaker for her then you should cart her down to a shop to have a look at both.

However i would still cry like a baby if someone asked me to swap one of those for my SGS2

She said it's going to be in her handbag all the time so doesn't care about the size of it.

If I can persuade her to get the GS2 then we'll go for that, but I don't think she's overly bothered. Just wants a nice screen, good camera and the ability to go on the internet/facebook :)

Camera wise the SGS2 is arguably the best on the market, it's certainly the best Android camera i know of. The screen is also better imo.

It might also be worth mentioning to her that the SGS2 uses gorilla glass unlike (iirc) the HTC S phones. While it is not indestructible, it's stronger than normal glass and more resistant to scratches so is less likely to be ruined in her bag.

With that said, after my own experiences, i'd get a screen protector no matter what phone i got.

Ok thanks, I'll suggest it to her when I see her tomorrow. Is that Phones4u deal likely to be in stores too?

HTC have used gorilla glass since atleast the G1 - desire has it so I'm guessing all their phones use it.

Yep the Desire S definitely uses Gorilla Glass.

Been looking to get it myself, still trying to push myself for it though!

The SE Xperia Arc has the best camera on the market at the moment.

My SGS2 has arrived now so ill get some comparative shots done.

HTC always seem to have shocking camera modules from past experience.

I think the Arc and SGS2 are about even, the Arc just post-processes the shots which makes them appear better than they often are.

Hmmm first few test shots I have tried using the flash are a bit iffy...

Ill start a new thread about it though.
