Hiya

My 9yo usually has my hand-me-downs and currently has an old X1800XT (512Mb). He really only plays older games such as CS, TF2 & WoW. Since the last patch WoW runs like a dog (about 5 fps!), even with all the options turned down.

I was wondering if there were any used cards that could be picked up for around the £30 mark that would run WoW with the recommended settings?

Yes I'm poor :D

Another option would be to give him my current 4850 and upgrade mine if I could get something better for a little extra dosh?

Thanks in advance.

4850 would be a good upgrade but scour the MM to see if you can grab an 8800GT or GTX. Still great cards considering how old they are and will play WoW very well.

There you go, there's an 8800GTX for sale in this thread for £28+postage. Bargain!

Perhaps you should have sent a private message.

Someone offered to buy it shortly after you posted.

You did give the seller some free advertising though.

I'll keep an eye on MM - thanks.

He has my old board and CPU: Asrock 4Core Dual VSTA mobo with a C2D E4300 (and 2Gig of RAM)

Is there a worthwhile upgrade of my 4850, perhaps for £50/60?

Cheers

I sold a Vapor-X 4890 on the bay a few months back for £75. So doubtful.

Edit: WoW is still pretty playable on my 8600GT laptop card @ 1440x900 so maybe a 9800GT 1GB if you can find one will do the trick.

I would recommend one, they are very quiet and capable cards.

The 4870x2 I'd buy for me and give my son my current 4850.

My CPU is an old E6600 running at stock speeds cos I'm clueless when it comes to OCing.... unless I'm told specifically what to change :)

Sorry, I misread, now I understand. :)

Regarding overclocking, head over to the overclocking sub forum and I'm sure you'll find any help you need there. It should be a case of just seeing what you can milk out of it with stock settings initially (simply changing the FSB), cpu cooler depending of course. That is a good price for one heck of a powerful card, I recently sold mine so I can vouch for them. They do suck up a lot of juice and are noise at load in my experience though.

Again, it might be a good idea to learn how to overclock your son's cpu (if the cooler is decent), since although a 4850 will be a very nice boost, online games are also quite cpu dependent. I used to play a lot of CS:S. I recall going from a 7800gtx to an 8800gtx, sure it helped, but not compared to when I upgraded the cpu (as was my situation). On the other hand, if you don't fancy dabbling in that area I'm quietly confident that he'll see a decent enough improvement over the X1800, especially in single player, non cpu biased games. :)

The board I have was supposed to be a good clocker, it's an Abit IP35 Pro XE.

I've got a 480w Tagan, my boy has a 350w Enermax.

You think either/both would need to be upgraded to power the 4870x2 & 4850?

Minimum recommended for the 4850 is 450 watt, 650 watt for the 4870X2. So, you could in theory drop the 480 watt in to your son's rig, (if it's an old one I would also consider upgrading his psu as with age they become less efficient), while also upgrading yours to a better psu for your PC. I'd edge towards a decent quality brand like Corsair or Antec. The PSU is the most important component you will buy.

Yeah I can't afford to spend £100 atm....I have been offered:

Palit 8800gs 384mb (has hdmi) boxed that I could do for £20inc
A 8800gt 512mb with an akasa vortex neo not boxed for £30inc.

I'm guessing either 8800 would need more juice than my sons 350 watter could put out?
