Hi everyone

Summer around the corner and the offices at work are beginning to get very hot with more bodies being crammed in monthly. Old building, doesn't have air-con so I'd like to get some portable units ordered in, can anyone offer any tips on what to go for (brands, types, etc) and what to avoid?

I need to cool the following;

  • 1 x 4m x 6m office w/ window -- 1 unit
  • 1 x 4m x 6m office w/ window -- 1 unit
  • 1 x 8m x 10m office wo/ window -- 3 units?
Budget would be around £300-£350 per unit. If an alternative, more permanent method is worth considering in this scenario please advise!

Many tanks and apaches,
Gee.

ummm, not sure this is a good idea, plus 5 units will cost a lot of money to run, also portable a/c units aren't exactly quiet, in fact they are usually quite noisy, and where are you going to put the extraction hoses which are about 4 to 5 inches diameter?

Some portable units come with window conversion kits, but then you have an office without a window, ideally it's best boring a hole in the wall for the a/c hose but it doesn't seem practical in this situation.

Ideally if your looking for a more permanent solution have a look at 'multi-split air conditioners', they are more expensive and require a compressor to be mounted an an exterior wall but they are a lot more effective.

something like this would be ideal,

It's a multi-split air conditioner that comes with three indoor units (one for each office) that will be wall mounted, and an external compressor, obviously you have to pay to have it installed as well though.

It's not exactly cheap but then 5 x a/c units @ £350 is £1750, you may as well go for a multi-split a/c system @ £1,368.00 (in the link above) and get it professionally installed and then you have a decent permanent solution, plus with split systems you don't have to worry about the noise as the compressor is outside.

Hey thanks a lot all of those points are duly acknowledged, and yes the multi-split a/c systems do seem a better investment in this scenario. I'll probably get in touch with a a/c specialist.
