Egypt's lost Cities

I thought the technology and what it has revealed so far was really interesting. But I didn't think the documentary itself was actually that good. The presenters were really irritating and either condescending or stupid - I couldn't quite decide which. And then obviously I guess the original plan was to reveal some of what they had found during actual digs based on the technology at the end, but that was pretty much completely scuppered by the political unrest in Egypt earlier in the year.

Obviously that couldn't really be helped, but it did leave me with a feeling of not really having seen much of what I actually tuned in to find out. Hopefully they will do a follow up a bit further down the line once they have had time to properly work on some of these locations.

Yeah I kind of had a feeling that it would have been disrupted in some way because of what happened in Egypt, and 10 minutes later I was correct.

I am going to have a look later to see if I can find anything else on her work.

Will let you know what I come up with.

It was great to see the images just shows how much we don't know about Egypts past. Tanis looked amazing! Would love to see this technology used elsewhere

It has been, if I recall they've already used it on parts of South America. I would like to see what they find in places like Cambodia, Mongolia, China and the Nazca Desert.

Satellites and technology have revealed interesting things.

Not in Egypt, I remember hearing a while back that two new cities (civilisations?) were found off the shores of Japan and India.

The technology was really interesting. It'll be great to see what results it will yield over time. The more I see and hear from Zahi Hawass the less I like him, how did he come across to people who didn't already know who he was I wonder.

Dont even get me started on Hawass.

I'm extremely heavily into Archaeology and frankly Hawass has almost single handedly done more to hold up/restrict the progress of Egyptian Archaeology over the decades than anyone else, for a specific reason and agenda that I wont go into here otherwise I will just rant and rave about him.

On the presenters, I found the guy to be ok, but the woman presenter was utterly annoying with her over the top dramatic faces and phrases.

The program itself was ok, but for the length of 90mins there was very little actual archaeology. There was a large amount of assumption and supposition, and a lot of egyptian history but not so much actual archaeology going on which was disappointing from my viewpoint.

Why is he so bad? To me who know nothing about him other than the few shows he's on, he comes across as fine.

As I say, I dont want to get started on him as I will rant for pages about him. But essentially it boils down to 2 things. He is stubborn that what he thinks/believes is correct and he will not budge on that belief, even going so far as to totally dismiss/cover up/whatever you choose to call it, evidence that suggests something other than his view/belief. If it doesnt fit with his image/belief of Egypt and Egypts history (or doesnt paint Egypt in the "right" historical context in terms of its place/importance in history) then he either ignores it, or worse still makes every effort to denounce it. Archaeology is a science and as such an archaeologist must be open minded about discoveries and history, as well as being honest about any "truths" discovered, even if they dont fit with the archaeologists own preconceptions of a site/artifact/history.

Secondly, he has on many occassions actively blocked the archaeological investigations of many well established and globally recognised "foreign" archaeologists, often when enormous advances and/or discoveries could have been made. Why he has done this is open for debate, I have my own thoughts as to why but again if I go into those I will go off ranting about him and his "agenda".

That sucks, I hate people like that.

Its a real shame, there is SO much more we could know about Egypt by now, if only he had given the all clear to various investigations. With him, its all either .. a) No..you're not doing that , or b) No..you're not doing that, *I* will do it, and you can stay away, and if there is something which I decide I want to reveal I will and if I decide its not to be made public, then I wont.

Thanks Tombstone, you saved me some typing there, I think we have the same view of him.

I was pretty tired when watching it but didn't he do that in the programme last night?

this.

i got excited when i saw this advertised last week but it didn't really live up to the hype for me

Imagine this being used on Mars!

</lolMagic>

But seriously, imagine if there was some form of life on Mars billions of years ago before its atmosphere got ripped away and what remains is deep under ground!

We discover this, then start digging into Mars to try and uncover it - but unbeknown to us we unearth an evil long locked away which ravages all the architects living there in colonies built with specially set up eco-systems.
Special teams are then sent to Mars to find out what happened to the colonies and why no word has been heard from Mars for several weeks. Once there they find something unhuman and it's a fight for survival to escape the planet.
Only one of the team make it to the escape pod alive and safely set the course for earth.

However, they aren't the only one who got on board the pod.

Know nothing about the first part, but as for the second you probably have to give him the benefit of the doubt. A great deal of relics after all are permanently based elsewhere thanks to there being a history of people taking what they want. The old finders keepers rule. :p

In days gone by that might have been the case, but in todays age, countries sneaking off with other countries artifacts is a much more rare occurrence. Aside from that, there is nothing to say that the archaeological digs and investigations couldnt have been done under the supervision of Egyptian authorities if they were worried, as opposed to simply not being done at all. The odd thing is, that if the investigation is "favourable" to the place of Egypt in history and something which fits into his ideas, he is fine with it. If however its something contrary to positive accepted Egyptian history, or doesnt fit with what he says then he dismisses it, refuses permission and in some cases has gone as far as to immediately kick the scientists/archaeologists out of the country.

To a degree yes he did, the American archaeologist asked for permission to dig the supposed pyramid area, it was refused. Then later it was given permission, yet she nor any of her people were allowed to do the dig, it was done by him, seperately and with no coverage allowed until he decided whether or not what was found was acceptable to be shown. Politics and beliefs cannot be allowed to enter into archaeology, you cannot decide if something discovered is made public on the basis of whether its positive for your country or your beliefs. Hawass isnt so much interested in the truth of archaeology as he is interested in archaeology, providing that it paints Egypt in the "right" light and in the right position in history.
