Right guys, I have my 100 meg install happening this saturday, but i need some advice on the rest of my home network.

currently my setup is

Router>Netgear 16 port hub>cat 5>Wired devices

now is my old netgear or the venerable old cat 5 cables going to bottleneck my connection?

i can transfer pc to pc within the house at greater than 9MB/s so am i likely to get max speed with my shiny new BB connection?

What is the netgear hub?

If its just 100mb, then you should still get full throughput. Might be worth sticking in a Gigabit switch anyway, they can be had quite cheaply now! Lets face it, if you can afford 100mb, then you can afford some shiny kit :p

A 100Mb port won't give you more than ~80-90Mb at best due to overheads and such. If you want the full speed out of your shiny new connection, I'd recommend getting gigabit.

10meg internet connection = 1MB transfer
100meg internet connection = 10MB transfer

my 1gb internet network transfer at about 80/90MB

which was about 4x faster than it was at 100meg so it was 20

so if you mean you have a 100meg internet connection it will be fine...

thought all those films you are downloading will transfer between your machines better if you spend £50/70 on a GB hub

Didn't they stop making hubs in like 1998? they were obsolete once switches became affordable, as you can get a 16 port switch off ebay cheaper than a big mac meal im gonna guess you actually have a switch, in which case I reckon your setup should be fine.

Also although a 100mb/s internet connection will transfer 12.5MB/s theoretically, extra space is taken up by headers and such, I can't see a 100mb/s internet connection shifting more than a 100mb/s Ethernet connection.

I can.

I regularly pull over 6MB/s out of a 50Mb connection, so see no reason why a 100Mb connection won't pull 12MB/s.

The overheads of TCP aren't exactly huge.

Yeah I wasn't saying he was gonna lose half his speed or anything, but if you consider that your getting 6MB/s from a 50Mb/s connection so therfore he should get 12MB/s from a 100Mb/s connection and he's currently getting 9MB/s+ while transferring files from a drive on PC1 to a drive on PC2 then he should have no trouble with his current setup.

Doh too early for me lol its a 16 port hub :) tis a switch indeed

might have to invest in a shiny new gigabit switch then

Yup I got me a Dell PowerConnect 2716 off t'bay for approx. £50 and it's managed gigabit switch. Has made a pretty big difference...
