I know my old AMD CPU will be a limitation, but I feel the need, and it will encourage me to upgrade the CPU/Mobo a little sooner!

Will a PCI-E 2.1 card, like the 6950 work in my DFI NF4 SLI DR MOBO, which I believe has PCI-E 2.0 slots?

Thanks

Good to go :) I'd grab the latest BIOS for your board if you haven't already, just to pre empt any unforeseen issues

It looks like my BIOS is the latest, so I've just ordered the card :-)

More than I really want to pay for a card, but it should keep me going for a few years, like my 8800gts 512 did.

Time to save up for the next bits...

Is'nt your board socket 939? That does not have pci-e 2.0, only pci-e 1.0. It should still work but will be like running in a pci-e 2.0 8x slot. Your cpu is really going to hold that card back as well.

Thinks it PCI-E 2.0, not sure, but the card is 2.0 and runs fine.

CPU is an 64 X2 4200+ running at 2.65GHz, so it s a big bottleneck, but I'll be replacing with 2500k and Z68 MOBO.

CPUz will tell you what the card is running at. The difference between 1.0 and 2.0'is minimal and on that CPU you won't see any difference in FPS. Are you going to try flashing it? :)

CPUz says PCI-Express x16, so I guess that is 1.0?

I may try to flash it, after checking out the guides, but I won't be able to check the perfomance increase till I upgrade the CPU.
