spoke to a friend who works in the pub about it. A regular who was in is a jeweler who gives cash for gold. He says it's not platinum and just scrap aluminium

He made the point of why would 850g of scrap platinum that's worth £30k be just left at a power plant!

Arête well was worth a go

It was Heysham power plant, he worked in a lab there which was decommissioned and moved to another site. He said they were scraps and buckled platinum crucibles that had holes in etc. But it was 30+ years ago and his memory isn't that impressive.

Sorry to disappoint it wasn't done purposely.

why lol cause some eclectic people take the wire out of high spec bits and bobs and save it cause they know its not aluminum wire

seen it with own eyes a few times .

some metals that 99 percent of population wouldnt know about are around but look very similar to other metals that are worth next to nothing.

this is why you get it tested either chemically or spark tested.

not everything is shiny either seen some very decent priced stuff that was rusty that was thrown away then it was found out what it was and everyone was looking for it

very rarely though it happens unless you work with stuff like this.

If I was sitting on a potential ~30k windfall, I wouldn't take the word of a guy from the pub. Especially with the comments in this thread about platinums historical low value back then. Nothing to lose etc etc.
