wait wait wait, 850g of aluminium is a significant volume of metal, Aluminium doesn't weigh very much. it's also not very soft (compared to platinum)

just post some pictures you trollop! :p

Calculations: 850g of *pure* aluminium has a volume of about 314cm^3
850g of pure platinum has a volume of about 40cm^3

how much of this stuff have you got?

:) spoke to a friend who works in the pub about it. A regular who was in is a jeweler who gives cash for gold. He says it's not platinum and just scrap aluminium :(

He made the point of why would 850g of scrap platinum that's worth £30k be just left at a power plant!

Arête well was worth a go :( had my eye in a Clio 182 aswell sigh.

why lol cause some eclectic people take the wire out of high spec bits and bobs and save it cause they know its not aluminum wire :)

seen it with own eyes a few times .

some metals that 99 percent of population wouldnt know about are around but look very similar to other metals that are worth next to nothing.

this is why you get it tested either chemically or spark tested.

not everything is shiny either seen some very decent priced stuff that was rusty that was thrown away then it was found out what it was and everyone was looking for it :D

very rarely though it happens unless you work with stuff like this.

This. My boss really lost his sense of humour once when he bought some about 3 tonnes of stainless steel and sold it on for about £1000 profit. Later he descovered where it had come from and that there might have been something special about it and the stainless steel wasn't normal SS but Uranus SS and worth £18,000 which is what the guy he sold it to got for it. Since then he always gets everything checked properly.

how did your bos manage to get it so cheap?

why why why would you just *take the advise of some "Random" guy in a pub?
Get it checked properly.
And, like everyone else has said "POST SOME PICTURES"

Agree on name change too!

thread does not deliver without picture!

Only thing i've ever found down my dads shed is a jar of mercury which has been down there from when my dad made mercury switches

Reading through the thread I was really starting to get interested. Fail thread is fail. I also found "scarp platinum" in my grand farther's shed. Although I can't take any pictures because someone stole my phone and the "scrap platinum" whilst I was down the road on holiday.

Post pictures of the tin or forever you are deemed "Platinum Penis"

1+ for name change.

Some people don;t know the "true" value of stuff. In this case he bought 3 tonnes of SS for £2000 and sold it on for £3000 (its true value). As it was it was really worth £18,000 and neither of them knew it.:p

wait wait wait - why are you taking the word of some guy in a pub all of a sudden??

aluminium and platinum are very different metals - easiest way is measure the density - platinum is very dense.

so, see how much water it displaces and weigh the water, then weigh the metal and compare - it should be very easy to tell whether its Al or not.

or get a blow torch and try and melt it - aluminium will melt easily - platinum will be hard to melt and will require an oxy/acetylene torch.

You've made the whole thing up, haven't you either that or you are willing to write off £25k for the sake of doing a tiny bit of research and believing what "a bloke down the pub" said.

Anyone who believes "a bloke down the pub" rather than an expert, when you are talking decent sums of money, is a fool.

BAN!

if it was what you thought it was then id get it checked out by a propper guy not some guy down the pub, if you sold it and it was what it was thought to be, then hes laughing his head off to the bank.

in leicester we have a few precious metals recyler places they have special machines to detect what metal type and quality is.
