just wondering what lucky escapes other people have had...

a while ago i was helping my friend in their back garden cut down some trees. He had a chainsaw and the chain was loose (you can see where this is going right?!)

after a while we needed to tighten the blade. the chainsaw has a safety system whereby you need to press a button and pull a trigger to start it up. so when he asked me to HOLD THE BLADE TIGHT, i was a bit unsure! especially as he had not pulled the electric plug out the wall ot switched it off!

'nah dont worry, look you can't start it by just pressing the trigger, it needs the button to release it see? these things are built for safety!'

so i grabbed the blade with both hands and pulled back, squeezing pretty damn hard! After a couple of minutes of trying to tighten it i suddenly let go. dont ask me what made me do it but something told me something was not right. when you get a feeling like that you go with it!

so i dropped the blade, releasing my fingers. at the same time the blade spun up!!!!

now if ever anyone has ever used a chainsaw you will know that they speed up really fast! if you were holding one and it spun up, no way would you be able to let go before you lost your fingers!

as it happens, i let go just before the blade spun up, so all i got was a paper cut!! In fact although the skin was split, i didnt even bleed, so all this superfast tree felling killing machine did was cut the the outside layers of my skin!

i still cant believe that i still have all my fingers after something like that!

so, was anyone else dumb, or lucky enough?!

Ooo that was lucky! With any tools I remove the plug from the socket before touching anything dangerous.

Nearly had a crash when I was in the car with some one a couple of weeks ago..

We were on the motorway and somebody nearly turned into us :|
Luckily, being in the middle lane we swerved into the third lane.

Doesn't sound much, but the thought of an accident at 70MPH on a motorway scares me, my hands were shaking!

A long time ago I was on holiday in Australia with my parents and we were touring in a little camper van thing around the kakadu national park. One day I was messing around outside and I started to play with this little spider, poking it and stuff, as you do. Eventually I got bored and I brushed it off my hand into the grass somewhere.

I later found out it was quite a bad one, and definitely should have left it be :p

actually the same thing happened to me, but the guy actually hit me!

i swerved across the first lane, hard shoulder and high the barrier (it was on the M5 flyover, baout a 100ft off the ground). bounced backwards and careered across all lanes of traffic and hit the central reservation, finally landing facing the traffic....

this is the front, when i hit the wall. as you can see it was pretty much head on.

this is the back of the car. you have to remember that this was after i had crossed lanes of traffic, hit the barrier, bounced off and skidded backwards....

Why did your friend try to cut your fingers off?

Had you been putting them in his wife?

lol, nah hes about 65 and a widow :). afterwards he was as shaken as i was...!

A few years back during some very strong winds, all load of roof tiles blew off my roof and damaged by car fairly badly. I went out to move the car, at the same time someone opened the front door and asked me something, as I was replying I heard a noise, looked up and saw a ridge tile heading straight towards me. I managed to jump out of the way at the last second and the tile smashed at my feet.

Went snowboarding off-piste one year at a resort we didn't really know very well and stopped about 2m from a 200ft cliff, that was 'slightly' scary.

A guy I used to goto primary school with invited me to a sleepover at his house, his mum and dad were supposed to be there but his dad was called away overnight. I was only 8 or so at the time, I didnt like staying away so I didnt stay again but about 15 years later his dad was on the front page of the local paper, having been sentenced to 20 years for severe peado-ing of young boys.

I was in the back of a MKIII Cortina years ago and the driver managed to roll it onto its roof doing about 70mph. The car skids along the road for 100yds and then bounced up the curb and fell down an embankment the other side.
The roof was flat and level with the bonnet, the petrol tank was full and petrol was running everywhere.

All 4 of us got out alive with just cuts and bruises!

Stuck a JCB bucket through a mains power line once that took out part of a large towns' power grid, gave off a right bang and spark. Thankfully the tryes kept me insulated, even luckier was that none of the lads were leaning against the machine whilst i was digging as they had a habit of doing!

Swimming in North Wales rivers and this particular river had a strong current couple feet down and I decided to jump in not long after we had quiet allot of rain fall. The river dragged me down fast and being bashed against rocks and being thrashed by the strong current was the most terrifying thing I've ever experienced. Anyway, I was trying to grab onto anything I could and luckily I managed to grab a tree that had fallen over across the river and I managed to drag myself to safety. Managed to escape with some nasty bumps and bruise just before the river started to get real rough with water falls and rapids.

Couple of days later, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/north_west/4793299.stm

Consider myself very lucky.

My luckiest escape - not quite in vain with the other stories here.

I had been feeling "a little ill" for about a week.
I was feeling really run-down and I found it difficult to lie-down.
So I'd spent a lot of that week on the sofa, not moving around much and because lying down was difficult, sleeping there too.

After a week breathing was becomming a little difficult so I decided to go and see the emergency GP at our local hospital.

Within five minutes I was being admitted with severe pneumonia and blood clots on the lungs.
I was in hospital for about three weeks but was told many people would not have survived that combination at that level of severity.
