i7 950 high temps

I downloaded speedfan to tell me the fan speed it says 100%. Is speedfan right?

It ran up to 70c doing a DX11 Heaven benchmark. I guess that is still too hot?

It runs up to 76c when playing the witcher 2. This sucks :(

I can litterally feel my room heating up from this PC. I've had 4 other ones before this and they have never given off so much heat.

I think the only solution to this would be an RMA. Send another email to OcUK and tell them that everything is plugged in and positioned correctly and that the temperatures you are getting are unnaturally high.

its hot outside

you are running a H50 on a bloomfield CPU, the temperatures are about right.
they are not 'unnaturally high'. they are about right for a mid range cooler.
which is exactly what a H50 is.

You beat me to this.

My i3 hits 48C playing WoW at 4.2 and hits around 64 max on long Prime runs, so I'd expect the i7 to be higher and if ambient room temperature is also a bit hot then the temps will raise with that.

That is well within the thermal threshold of the CPU! The weather is hot outside, which would have a bearing on the CPU temperature. Whilst it is warm it is certainly nothing to worry about given that the machine is overclocked.

Reply from OCUK.

I have seen on line vids of people with my cpu oc'd, with lower temps. guess the h50 sucks. :(

the h50 isnt the best but it certainly isnt terrible.
ambient temperature has a lot of bearing on its performance.
also case airflow and other factors need to be accounted for.

Its fully cable managed as it was built by OCuk. And my room doesnt get that hot. But if I left prime to run it would go up over 90c easy.

Everyone I speak to from OCuk just says 87c is a normal temp for an oc'd i7950. Some forums say HT causes lots of heat if its on. I have no clue what HT does or how to turn it off. Playing GTA4 it went up to 79c, while my GTX580 was around 56c, this card is a beast compared to my old ones, it runs so cool.

Hyperthreading allows Windows and some other programmes to see the CPU has having 8 threads. It does cause temperatures to increase, both at idle and at full load.

Is the CPU at stock? ie 3.06GHz with HT enabled? - if so then this is too hot! yes its warm outside and the H50 is OK but not the best but it should not be idling at nearly 50 deg C and hitting 90 degC at full load. If this is the case then Overclockers should be doing something about it!

My i7 920 running at 4.3GHz (HT disabled) is idling at around 40-45 degC and at full load when priming hits 85 degC.

I dont know, OC built it for me. I'm not confident enough to take it apart, as pc's are not my area of expertise. Also I dont have any spare thermal paste as they built it. Is the cooler meant to make watery sounds? Just asking cause it doesnt.

Sorry, but I wouldn't trust anyone else to build your PC. I've heard loads of people on various forums (HardOCP) saying stories about when they've brought pre-build/clock PC from various stores (inc OCuK).

I guess the main reason for this is that it can take days to fully test and build a pre-clocked system.

OOOO well.

I had same problem with i7 920 temps, would hit 50 easily at idle, replaced the alienware liquid cooling for performance heatsink, now idle temps are 30 - 35

Its Oc'd by OCuk to 4ghz. (i7950)

How do I check if its enabled?

go to your bios; CPU configuration options (or something similar); and it will be an option there.

I don't see why this would be an issue, it might make it a little cooler turning it off, but it would also decrease performance, you might want to google "overclocking guide" and play around with your CPU voltages, all the time you are spending here and worrying about this could be spent finding the optimal voltage and I would say you have a good chance (with a bit of work) of getting a more significant improvement in temperatures

it will take time to test the overclock but as far as actual learning and effort, not much of these can give you a significant improvement

just what i would do... have fun
