HD4870 and GTX260 freeze system, HD2350 doesn't. Why?

Does anyone have any idea why both a HD4870 and a GTX260 both freeze/crash my system on 'Windows Starting' (post driver install), but a HD2350 doesn't?

I'm guessing it is probably a flaky motherboard but I thought i'd check here first seeing as the low spec graphcis card works but the higher spec ones don't and someone might have an idea.

I've done 3 clean installs of Windows (W7x64) and many clean installs of the graphics card drivers, but only HD2350 works. I know both the other cards work as I've tested them on other systems.

hd2350 must be pretty low spec, never even heard of it

Therefore gonna echo guy above me, your PSU is probably some ancient unbranded one that isnt supplying enough juice, 4870's were pretty power hungry, dont know about 260's.

Sorry, I should have given the PSU spec. It's a Corsair HX520w, and it ran the GTX260 no problem on my old Q6600 system. The 4870 spec says it needs a 500w PSU.

The rest of my system spec is:

Intel i5-2500K 3.3GHz
ASUS P8H67-M B3
OCZ Intel Extreme XMP 4GB
Corsair P64 SSD

I've also tried it with just 1 stick of RAM to get as minimal power use as possible when I was testing to see if it was the PSU. Also, Antec's power supply calculator says I need 392w for my full system, so I don't think it's the PSU.

I assume that you have clean power to the graphics card! Using a proper 6 pin rather than a molex supply. If not try a molex off another line.

Try another PCIe slot.

andy.

Yes, i'm using 2x 6pins direct from the PSU.

I can't try the other PCIe slot as the graphics card are too big to fit and not cover the power switch terminal.

+1 for power related.

Try other ways to power the card or reduce overall system requirements.

A 520w corsair really shouldn't struggle to power that system

Is there any way you can test the other PCIe slot at all? Even if it's just a temporary test.

Have you tried updating your bios?

Just to draw this one to a close, it turned out it was the the board. I RMA'd it and their checks confirmed it.

20+ hours wasted testing every component and a load of reinstalls.
