Whats killing my Nikon batteries?

I've got 3 Nikon EN-EL3e batteries that I use between my D200 and D700. One suddenly stopped charging up about 2 months ago so I just put it to one side. Now another one has stopped charging?!

They sit in the charger like normal and the light blinks for about 30 seconds, like normal then then goes steady as if its fully charged.

Could 2 batteries die this quickly or is the charger suspect? Anyone else experience this?

Changed the charger and tried charging the cells again last night. The most recent battery charged up to about 25% and the other one is totally dead and won't charge

Can anyone vouch for the aftermarket/third party EN-EL3e batteries vs Nikon ones? They're about 1/4 the price. Is it a case of buy cheap buy twice?

ebay ones id avoid but touch wood the shop that has an amount of days in the title ive never had issues with.

If they're 1/4 of the price, buying twice is still a huge saving ;)

IDD, I got 2x repacement Canon EP-6 (for my 60D) for under £20, so far on the 1st charge, they've done over 2000 shots with about 25% charge left, and that's fairly mixed usage of normal & IS. Considerably cheaper than the £60-70 each for the genuine article.

Also got 2x replacements for my Casio EX-FH100 compact last year for £3 each, rather than the £50 genuine, and they match it for longevity also.

im not against cheap batteries, like i say ive had no problems with compatible ones from the shop i mention in the 20D's and ive just ordered some compatibles for the 5Dmk2 also.

ebay however can be a minefield with crap batteries.

Not sure if you missed it, but I didn't get mine from ebay, mine were purchased from the online store based in Guernsey ;)

I've used compatible Innov8 batteries in my Nikons for a couple of years, still going strong.

£25 each IIRC , though possibly cheaper.

Personally, I'd avoid the really cheap batteries, the Nikon originals are a bit over the top IMO but you do get what you pay for so something middle of the road should be good.

Just ordered two Energizer ones for less than the price of an official Nikon one, £23.98 delivered and with 2 year guarantee can't be sniffed at!

Cheers neil_g, I'd forgotten about that etailer ;)
