why so many reports of ssd drives dissapearing?

I still take regular images of my install despite using a SSD which is supposed to be more reliable than a HDD. If it's important data then always assume the worst can/will happen and take regular backups.

Exactly. I have Acronis setup to take nightly incremental backups (to my second drive), If anything goes wrong It's barely 15 minutes to restore.

my vertex 2 120gb has just died this morning just made it over a month old, wont be buying another thats for sure peice of crap compared to trusty intel x25m which hasnt had one problem and is around 2years old

Mine has done the exact same thing! all of a sudden BIOS won't detect it (in every machine I try it in) Had it since November 2010. I've submitted an RMA with OCZ yesterday - not happy! Reinstalling and reconfiguring an SSD with Windows is a pain in the neck, reinstalling all my programs and setting up all the symbolic links, ugh

i got my vertex working again using the method they pm'd me on their support forum, but i aint putting my trust into them again, ive lost a lot of valueable data, how the hell can a drive just currupt its firmware data just like that, surely it should be write protected

Could you link me to this method please? If I can get it to be picked up in the BIOS I might be able to reflash the firmware and *maybe* able to unbrick the thing :/

you have to put a jumper on the 2 little pins at the side of the drive near the sata port and then try in the bios itll come upwith some strange name.

if its the vertex 1 120gb sata 2 drive you have then let me know and ill forward the programs to you.

if not then im affraid youll have to use the support part of ocz forums to be able to fix it as each flash is defferent for each size/type

gaz

Ah darn it's a Vertex 2 120Gb. Not sure it even has any jumpers on it - I'll take a look when I get home.

Also is RMA through OCZ the best way or should I contact overclockers? (I bought it from here)

i had this once with my intel m25 ssd once, computer blue screened and gave a hard drive related error, and when i restarted it began to load windows then froze, then wouldn't boot at all. the ssd droped off from the boot order. i then found it again in the hard drive menu in the bios and it was fine and has been for several months, updated the firmware just in case tho.

Another duff one here

My 6 month old 60gb Vertex 2E also "disappeared" in the bios recently.
OC not interested in handling the RMA , had to do via OCZ in the Netherlands.Quick turnaround time (about 1 week) but am getting back a Vertex 2 not a 2E. Still trying to decipher if that means I've lost out with an inferior product as well as time/postage etc.

I'm keeping fingers crossed on my other SSD a 60gb Agility 3, must must must remember to not jump in feet first on new products.........

I have had 3 Vertex’s (the first version) die one in the first year and the others after six months use:mad::mad::mad:, I just couldn’t depend on them so use them on the backup PC, I went for the Crucial SSD and so far so good, if I and when I go for another SSD it will be Crucial OR Intel but have to say the Corsair ones look good.

I think you will find people will shout if their SSD has died, but won't even bother with this section of the forum if their drive is fine. I'd like to know what the ratio is, but it's probably not as bad as you think. My Vertex 2E is fine :)

Oh aren't you all posh with the Calibri

This :). So far I have experience with the following ocz ssds:

2x Vertex 2E, one running for 9 months and the other for 4 months (one is a friend's ssd).
Agility 1, running for 2 months.

All of which have had no issues what so ever. I think there is a higher than average failure rate, but that doesn't bother me. I make regular images and as long as they die in warranty I'm not massively bothered.

Making this post has probably condemned them all to death mind :p.

I'm not sure if it's just OCZ or Sandforce in general, apparently the Force 3's are having similar problems to the Agility/Vertex 3's.

You rarely, if ever see issues with Crucial/Intel drives and that's what I'd recommend to buy.

I have never had a single problem with my crucial ssd

Yeah, i reinstall every few months anyway, only install the absolute essential and all of my important files are in Dropbox anyway so a drive dying isnt that much of a problem for me :)

i just hope my vertex 60gb doesnt decide to die on me :)

I've had an Intel 160Gb for almost 18 months now and it's never once suffered this problem.

I was looking at replacing it soon as the newer drives are a fair bit faster and was looking at other brands but since reading this thread I think I'll wait for the next gen Intel drives :(

From what I've read it's certain commands being sent to OCZ drives and there are registry tweaks that can solve the issue completely.

Personally I have an Intel 160GB G2 drive and am also considering the new elmcrest line, price is probably what will make me decide to buy or wait.

/Edit: The intel's are still way above the others in terms of relability, I think intel RMA rate was 0.5% vs 2.5% upwards for all the others.

I do wish OC would handle the RMA's themselves. After having had to post mine off to the Netherlands on the 28th May, OCZ sent a replacement, his the FED EX tracking log:

This was OC's response:
"I am sorry to hear there is a problem with the item, as this is over 28 days old you will need to RMA the item directly with the manufacturer themselves. Please visit the manufacturers website and fill out the RMA request and they will cover the item under warranty for you if there is a fault with the item

James Bailey

This is giving me 2nd thoughts on where to buy my Z68 + cpu. OC are letting themselves down fobbing off RMA's to the manufacturer especially for urgently needed boot drives...
