Apple doesn't like 3rd parties giving away their products?

Apple control the horizontal, Apple control the vertical.

Apple as a brand is more valuable than the products, thus anything that waters down the perception of the brand like this is bad, and so they will do all they can to control the brand.

How does it water it down though?

It's a competition, it's not like people are going around saying "Hey they're giving away those iPad things now".

:( I wont one a few weeks ago through a company we deal with at work, should be here in 2 weeks. hope I still get it

So if I own an iDevice and then decide to give it away to a lucky winner that enters my competition, they don't allow this? Rubbish. What a joke! If I owned the device I do what I want with it that includes smashing it into tiny little pieces, giving it away or pooing on it. They have no control what I do with it after it's purchased.

I am guessing the restrictions only apply to Apple redistributors or those who otherwise otherwise have some kind of agreement with Apple. With those people, they most certainly would get a say in the matter.

It's nothing to do with being a distributor, look at the link in the OP.

Yeah OK, I think you are right.

Mind you, as much as it does strike me as needlessly controlling, I suppose it might have at least something to do with using the Apple brand to promote your own business. If that is the case though, I do not personally understand why some product lines are singled out.

This may very well also apply to individuals, but I suspect they may slip in under the radar and are not the focus of it.

Funnily enough I've just received an email from the OU promoting a free iPad.

To be honest I'm not surprised at Apple clamping down on anything that even suggests devaluing the brand - it's their prerogative. But equally I hope people tell Apple to cram it.

The irony is that this damages Apples reputation far more than a product give away ever could.

Of course it doesn't, it's only techies who have any interest in a story like this. Most people don't care in the slightest.

Only apple seem to care their product is being given away though...

I still reckon some people have this backwards though. I am not so sure it is about caring about the product being given away, so much as it is about other companies gaining publicity through doing so. About them promoting their brand using Apple's name and products, without Apple's explicit consent. It is possible that they are still being needlessly controling about it but it does make a little more sense (to me at least) when looked at it that way.
