So I've been considering quite a few cars now to buy, mainly stuff like old civics, accords, 323's, leon's, polo etc. But I saw a really nice S60 on the ads for around £1500, checked out the insurance for it and it's only like £70 more then a crappy 1.4 civic, £950 for s60, so i'm seriously considering these cars, always loved the look of them and they seem like really good cars, but I have two issues, first one being are they reliable? worried about weak geaboxes, suspensions and turbo, second question being what is the fuel economy like? i know they are 2.0 and a big car so your never get 50mpg from it, but i'm concerned they might drink really badly, like low 20's and I live in London so quite a bit of urban driving, I won't be doing much miles, upto 2-3000 miles a year, so would they be okay in fuel economy?

Cheers

My 2.4 v70 turbo gets 25mph if Im gentle, drops down to 20mph if I drive it like I want to.
I used to have a non turbo v40 2.0 that averaged 32mpg, based in that I would say your looking at high 20's

I have a 2.0 T S60 and have averaged 35mpg over the last 1000 miles. They are thirsty about town but most of my driving is NSL roads

I average 50mpg in my D5 S60, however this is with a lot of motorway mileage. Realistic figure is 45

I'd walk away very fast from an S60 for £1500!

But the petrols drink like there's no tomorrow. If you've got a heavy foot and drive around London, you'll see very low 20s.

TBH, it wouldn't even make much monetary difference if it did sub 20mpg if you're only doing 2000 miles a year.

If you've only got £1500 to spend, have a look at older Volvos like 960/S90s or S70s.

Much more likely to be in good condition over a bottom-of-the-pile £1500 S60.
I was just browsing PH and found a T5 for £1600. 6 Owners. Do not want.

Don't like those models :9( and engine is way too big, want something under 2.0. (Although I've always liked the 850 estates lol.)

Also why would you guys not go for an s60 for £1500?

The one I was looking at is this: http://www.sloughtradecentre.co.uk/used-cars/volvo-s60-2-0-t-s-4dr-slough-201122388542174

seems decent enough, but i'm worried about things like the turbos blowing. Hmmm back to the drawing board I think, can't think of anything decent to get.

Turbo on that car will be low pressure, whereas t5's have bigger Turbos and are mire aggressively mapped, so its not so much of a concern. Bushes, suspension parts and engine/gearbox mounts are more things to keep an eye on. Also avoid an auto box if possible, as they cost a bomb to put right if they go south.
