E7500 (Now Overclocking question)

Just salvaged a E7500 from a broken work machine, and will use it to replace my P4 system at home.

Only need a mobo.

Am I right in assuming any of these will do the job?

They will indeed.

Watch out for the Gigabyte G41MT-S2P Intel G41 as it's DDR3 only as is the MSI G41M-P25 Intel G41

Unless you want DDR3 of course..

I hope the cpu isnt broken....

I doubt it.

I mean if I was able to navigate the bios, and run a linux preboot program, all that would require a cpu......

I have some ddr2 ram, which out of those boards would you suggest?

I was looking at this one.

I already have a socket 775 cooler on my P4, I will be able to reuse it right?

Looks like a good choice, that chip should overclock a fair bit on that board.

I had a E7200 at 3.6ghz on a similar setup.

Cooler will do but you might be better picking up a half decent aftermarket cooler and get a bit more out of it.

Sorry to add nothing useful to the thread but I thought it said £7500 mobo question. Got a little excited to see some insane gold plated motherboard or something :L

:D

Surely a E7500 is a decent step up from a P4 3.2Ghz?

My P4 is still good, but its struggles a little bit now on the internet and with flash etc....

Interms of overclocking am I looking at a max safe voltage of around 1.36v?

Max safe heat you reckon?

Factor in this is the PC I will still use when my loft is 35c and Im sweating my pants off.

55c?

Max volts is around 1.4v, but I seriously doubt you'd need anything more than 1.3v. Max temps under stress is about 70c ideally.

That E7500 is a fantastic CPU for general work - it runs very cool (always under 60C at default voltage even with stock cooler) and will be quite a lot faster than your P4 at everything.

It will also be a huge amount more energy efficient even though its dual core. It's rated at 65W, same as all 45nm core2's, but in real life it uses much much less, amongst the lowest power users in the core2 series. I'd say half of the P4, yet be much faster. Just take a look at how low power the E7200 is:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-e7200-g31,2039-4.html

And that's total system power, not just CPU!

The E7*** series are not cut down E8*** series with half the cache disabled like some people think - they are actually a stand alone core with less transistors and smaller physical dimensions for the die. Quite a lot smaller too - the main transistor count in a CPU comes from the cache.

As a result, they are very power efficient, clocking themselves down much better than a P4 when doing little or less work. Plus they do overclock like crazy, massively helped by the 1066 bus - how well and at what voltage depends more on the motherboard. The CPU itself will do 3.6Ghz comfortably and you can keep speedstep enabled.

There are actually two versions of the E7500 - one with virtualization, and one without:

You may be lucky and get a little extra.

Thanks for the information andy_mk3 & spirits247.

70c  How come the core2duo's have a higher heat threshold than the core2quad's?

My Qx9650 is safe upto about 60c.

Ok so it sounds like overclocking this chip should be easy.

Il probably stop at around 60c, as this is the pc I will still use when my loft is 35c and I need a computer to use!

It is just a case of upping the fsb and voltage tweaking?

I hope the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 I bought is up to the job?
