Motorola CEO: Open Android Store Leads to Quality Issues

I would say most Motorola phones are returned because they couldn't get a decent answer from their terrible customer service not because they are running an app that slows down their phone.

...and now we know why Motoblur kills performance, it's spying on you all the time.

GG Sanjay, wonder if I'll buy another Motorola?

:(

Obvious point is obvious.

I think Apple's closed implementation is far far better. It's the number one reason I swapped back to an iPhone just a few days after swapping one for a Desire.

apple will check on how apps perform? shocked as what would they say to the developer if it's found to use a lot of resources?

although he may have had a valid point what it seemed like to me was he was trying to advertise that they now advise what apps to use. he scares readers into thinking apps are using all the phones power and then straight after goes but not for us as we've made the only solution.

He's right that the vetting for Android Market is very poor. Even my friend's hello world app got accepted!

Getting the right balance between accepting everything and being too restrictive is very difficult though.

^ There must be a gazzillion 'hello world' apps available :D

lol But could there a little truth in his madness?

That some of Motorolas customers are too stupid to uninstall a crappy app? :D (blur aside)

Using it to "differentiate the company" is not something to be proud of but then again I hate the 'dumbing down' culture of everything these days.

Well no **** there's no vetting so yeah, congrats to him.

I'm not going to defend motoblur but I think some of you might be under a mis-understanding of how multitasking works on each OS, neither are alike (as in iOS and Android) and offer a different set of pros and cons. Symbian I'd wager has the best OS for scheduler / thread control anyway.

It's pretty obvious that he's talking about poorly compiled (popcap apps >100mb), sleep waking (motorblur grrrr) and just bad apps(facebook for android) rather than the 3D games that eat the juice.

One way that Motorola is able to better understand and in the future control the impact applications have on performance is through its Motoblur application. Launched initially as a social-networking hub on most Motorola phones, Motoblur now serves a broader purpose, he said.

Motoblur collects information about customer use of applications and how that use relates to functions like power consumption.

What the hell, this is awful!

I agree, the Android Market is utterly terrible. The only way a user can really find out about new/popular apps is to be told about them elsewhere, actually browsing the market is a painful experience. Google need to go on a mass-purge.

The Android Market is generally a bit of a mess compared to the Apple store, so I can agree. Google need to get rid of the rubbish and tidy everything up, otherwise we'll end up with 1 million apps and only 0.5% will be widely used.

There are plenty of good apps on it though, you just have to find them.

Having said that, Motorola are the last people who should be complaining about software, as they currently hold the 'worst bloatware' crown :p

Thing is, can Google start fumigating the Market without people complaining of it being "closed"?
