Motorola CEO: Open Android Store Leads to Quality Issues

Keep it open! Most of the decent apps would disappear, who cares if your dumb enough to install/keep a poor performing, crappy, dodgy app?
Just use the Amazon/nVidia/Sony etc store for vetted software. Actually with side loading we don't even need a Google store, there'll always be other places to buy em from. Internetz for the win! :D

iTunes has the same overall problem, I only download stuff by word of mouth over physically searching the app store, way to much time consuming chaff. (Staff favs and top tens are miles better though :))

Having said that, Motorola are the last people who should be complaining about software, as they currently hold the 'worst bloatware' crown :p

LG!!!! They can't even supply a stable OS build with their bloat :D

Why would they disappear? The intention would be to only block/remove apps that are of poor quality in the first place or already have a million equivalent versions. I can't see why it'd have much of an impact on the good apps; if anything it'd bring them to the forefront more because people might actually attempt to browse the Market to look for stuff.

And it's not a case of being "dumb enough" at all, you aren't going to know how an app performs until you use it. Google can and should do more to ensure that users don't have to resort to trial and error.

who's to decide which to keep and then which is the better one for you? even a simple app that says hello world on a yellow background and say there is another with a green background, who will decide which is the one that should stay? it wont happen as that's the point of it which is to be open for the great stuff but along with it you'll get the rubbish stuff.

what actually needs to happen is a better way to find the better apps. e.g. only show apps with 3 star or above, or show only the "certified by android as a quality app" apps. etc. this will then hide the rubbish ones and not cause any problems by being closed.

my first website was one that said hello world. i made it then moved on to one that had paragraphs, then the next thing etc. i imagine this is often the same with apps. people will make one that is useless but it'll get accepted and then push them towards making a better apps until they make something really decent. stopping them at stage one would be a mistake

and devs can still do that without the need to publish to the app store, right?

If people want to keep the rubbish little apps that do nothing useful, then Google need to design a new frontend. They can just copy the app store and have things like -

Hot this week

Staff picks (basically Google picking some really decent ones)

Apps optimised for dual-core

Top 50 paid and free

etc.

it helps to motivate by having it there and having 5 peoples download etc. it's demotivating to have an app removed by google because it's no good

So if you make a Hello world app with a green background, why would you even put it on the Market in the first place? Who the hell would want it? Its just spam.

Agreed. If a dev is looking for constructive criticism, the Market isn't the place for it anyway. All the comments ever consist of is "FORCE CLOSES ON MY [insert handset name here] ITS CRAP!!11".

The Android market is totally different to iTunes, there's so much more going on...

Take SetVsel for example. Awesome source for Defy owners, best app ever! but utterly pointless to everyone else. (@james.miller. It's had 20+ great revisions, the first was basic but just as vital :))

Who's going to validate apps like that? There's millions of em!
It requires root (completely intrusive), only people with a Defy can use it and any idiot could probably destroy the phone with too much voltage.

What happens to all these great apps? Side loading from the web would be a recipe for disaster (thinks of something popular like Titanium backup being compromised etc)

Don't take away my awesome source :(

yes if you make a hello world app with a green background it's spam to most people but to others it's something else. it's not up to you to decide which apps are the ones that can be there, however it is up to you/google/anyone else to decide which are the ones that are the best and the ones that should be easily findable. what google need to do or anyone else like amazon is make it easier to find good apps and a way that the bad ones are hidden from immediate view so that they are as good as gone.

it's the same as websites surely. atm there is tones of spam if not most websites out there are spam, however you have search engines that rank websites on different factors and will display hopefully only the good useful sites. i'm amazed that google being about clearing up all the worlds info have yet to clear up their market place.

What is 'something else'?

I disagree. An app store is an integral part of a phone operating system, it is essential that it runs effectively and works well in order to sell phones and for people to enjoy it properly. Apple have got this right, Google can too.

anything else, what does it matter. i may find a hello world app fun just because it an app made by a family member and i show off that little timmy who's just 10 years old made an app and get family members to have a look. ok doesn't do much but it shows knowlegde in an area most don't have a clue about. to me that's good enough reason to allow any app as long as they aren't stealing info.

why don't you want apps that are useless to you (and almost every other person) there? i dont get it. if you never see them why are you concerned?

Because piling rubbish in there just clogs up the system, these horrible little apps mar the search results and just serve no purpose.

It is not the same as setting up your own website on the web, it is all being done within the Android Market, which is a place for people to get/browse USEFUL apps, not garbage.

I didn't pay a ridiculous amount of money for the latest Android phone just to make little Timmy proud of whatever rubbish he's produced. The crap needs to go, it spoils the experience and undermines Android as a quality platform.

^ lol sounds like your downloading every single app on the market :D

So what have we learnt today?

1. Google needs to sort out searching/organisation/ranking etc. :)
2. Searching for Justin Bieber brings up 160 apps on the Android Market, 160 on iTunes and only 14 on Zune. (Where's Apples quality control? Is WP7 really that unpopular? :o)
3. TheVoice needs his own personal app store.
4. Motoblur is still **** even after removing 160 Justin Bieber apps.
