This is on TV at the minute and I was just wondering if anyone could confirm something from the original film release of Saving Private Ryan.

I saw it when it first came out, as I'm sure many of you did, and I've never seen this mentioned anywhere so thought I'd put it to OcUK.

Near the beginning as Tom Hank's squad are making their way to find Ryan, they get pinned down by a sniper on the outskirts of a village and Vin Diesel gets shot. Eventually Barry Pepper takes him out and all is well...

NOW... when I saw this in the cinema I'm certain that the German sniper shot Vin Diesel multiple times in multiple places (in the legs etc.) when he was out in the open and the others couldn't get to him - i.e. in a sadistic fashion.

This is something I clearly remember (I was fairly young when I saw it so was a bit shocked) but this scene isn't on the DVD or any version I've ever seen since...

Anyone else remember this or heard anything about why/if it got cut?

i don't remember this at all. Are you sure ?

It doesn't fit with the scene either. If he had shot him too many times each muzzle flash would have given away his position and shortened his life even further. Reducing the likelyhood that his comrades would come to his rescue.

Theres hope to try and save somebody from one gunshot wound, but 5 ....

I saw it at the cinema and have the DVD / BluRay I can confirm I know the scene you mean well, it was however only a single shot with the potential to be shot again as he was still moving around.

You could be getting mixed up with full metal jacket although its a long shot as thats a Vietnam war film although the scene you describe happens in the film.

I think that scene is mixed up with varios other sniper ones as descrived apove.

this keevoard is so vroken hope this makes sense.

worst part of this film is the house fite near the end with the nazi vs the wap .... and the weasel man just watches it... freaks me out massivelee

As I recall, without having watched it in a while, Vin Diesel is hit once and drops. As he is led on the ground, the sniper starts lining up another shot, but notices that Vin Diesel is talking and gesturing to the rest of the squad. As he tracks across to where Vin Diesel is gesturing Barry Pepper shoots him.

I'm definitely not mixing it up with FMJ (another film I know very well). Hmmm, maybe I'm just misremembering then if nobody else remembers it that way.

The main reason I remember this so clearly is that when I first saw it on DVD or TV afterwards I distinctly thought 'Weird, they must have cut that out because it's too brutal for the small screen.'

Fact: The guy picks up the wrong arm i.e. he picks up a left arm with his left arm, or vice versa.

To be fair your not going to be in a fit state to pick your arm out of the possible dozens of other dismembered arms lying about.

good film, I went with my parents to see this on the first night. There was an old guy sitting behind us with his medals on. My mum was also heavily pregnant and my little brother was kicking like mad during the opening sequence.
