Thinking of buying an iPhone 4 16Gb. Its used but has 3 months warranty left.

A few questions:

- What if it suffers from the death grip? What does Apple allow under warranty? Can I get a free bumper? And does that sort the issue out?

- Is there a J/B for latest iOS?

- iRealSMS supported yet? Other similar/good text messaging apps available?

- Any issues on O2 network and iPhone 4?

- Any issues i should look out for?

1. Nope, no more free bumpers. Just get a cheap, but decent one from somewhere, not an overpriced Apple one.

2. Yes

3. Not sure, I just use the vanilla messaging app.

4. Nope

5. Not really, but I would recommend waiting for the iPhone 4S/5 rather than buying a 4 now.

Cheers Guys.

Think im best just unlocking carrier on my 3GS on 3.1.3 so I can use it on O2 (currently with Orange) as im moving over to their simplicity deal. I'll wait to see what's in store from Apple and then decide but I do want something that is unlocked to any network rather than doing it via a software unlock.

iPhone 4 are all unlocked if purchased from Apple, I can't see the new ones being different :)

No point in going iPhone 4 now.

Software wise the Android OS has caught up and is better than iOS in its current state.

Hardware wise it is beaten by many Android handsets. If you're open to going Android 2 of the best phones you want to be looking at the Nexus S and Samsung Galaxy S II.

I had a 3GS for almost two years so have a valid opinion. iPhone 4 is just a 3GS with a better screen and camera. Hardly any noticeable speed increase from my time spent using one.

Wouldn't pay to much attention to above IMO. Galaxy2 yes nexus S probably no and pretty big difference between 3GS and IP4 to early for me to list them all!

Depends how you value the retina screen I guess, it is night and day for me, I find the phone faster than a 3GS but its not massive, the phone is a lot more powerful, consider it uses double the resolution of the 3GS.

I'd stick though for now probably, see what they unveil in September, which looks to be the likely time.

Fortunately while you're perfectly entitled to your opinion, it is just that, an opinion :).

Thanks guys.

I've unlocked my 3GS so wount be needing another phone after all.
Think i'll just wait it out and see whats up ahead as the 3GS does everything i want from a phone.

Sacking Orange off and going O2. Number gets changed tomorrow.

Im out of contract from Orange. Do i need to tell them anything to close my account?

^ It's heavily subsidised on some contracts and works out at ~£320 with a minimal contract on some o2 deals. You could wait a few months and the price will drop to £400 or less sim free. (2GHz lower power version coming out in ~6 months )

Can't wait to see how Apple responds with all this new stuff going on (Windows 8/High end Android phones etc)

Having had a 3GS from 8:30AM on day one I tend to agree that the iP4 is not worth the £250 I'd need to spend to buy a new one (assuming £250 for my 3GS).

However once the iP5 is announced, prices of the old version drop by £50 or more and I should be able to pick up an in warranty iP4 for £300-350, add years applecare and im sorted for another year.

Certainly DON'T buy a new iP4 now.

In warranty + applecare = win.

PS: Anybody selling their iP4 16Gb this way please ;)

I wouldn't buy an iP4 now, for the simple reason that the iP5 is likely to depress the price a bit! I don't expect the iP5 hardware to be a massive upgrade, so with a cheaper iP4 running iOS 5.0 you should be laughing.

You may well have a valid opinion regarding the superiority of Android, but finding you spamming it in every iPhone thread is getting quite tiresome! Can you not accept that the iOS/Android debate is a matter of personal preference, and that someone posting an iPhone question isn't an invitation for you to convert them?

Phandroid? I go where the best is, I do not have fanboy obsessions with products or brands.

What do you mean the Galaxy S II is the only handset that beats the iPhone 4? PLENTY of phones are superior hardware wise to the iPhone 4 and have been for a while.

This is not about hardware. Software is where the iPhone is falling short, hardware isn't the problem with it.

I'm sorry my valid opinion hurt you so much. But hey I had my iPhone for 19 months so I'll give my honest opinion on the state of them if I want to. **

** and don't say that my having 'only' a 3GS invalidates my opinion as the iPhone 4 uses the exact same software, the hardware makes little difference. I don't give a damn what the screen or camera was like on the 3GS, the software is what matters.

I believe that the iOS vs Android is a matter of personal preference when it comes to usability, iPhone is still a more user friendly experience, I can give it credit there. It's much less worry and hassle when deciding what iPhone to get, you don't have to worry about if you will get all the latest updates, if it will come bundled with crappy carrier applications/modified Android versions.

The only thing I truly believe to be fact, is that Android 2.3.4 is technically a better OS with more features and far better background/multitasking support.

I don't really know why people get so irritable over this, I never said it wasn't a good phone, it's just not a good purchase at this point in time, there's finally really great alternatives now that Android has matured, I can't comment on WP7.

I shall leave it at that. I look forward to iOS 5, should be some nice features that will no doubt be implemented into Android, maybe the iPhone 5 next year will be my phone of choice.

^I'd take an iP4 over an SGS2 anyday, I have too many apps on iTunes now to make it worthwhile switching... As you say, it's the software that matters... ;)

That's not a bad idea, I may do the same, hopefully 3GS prices won't drop too much in the near future as an iP4 would be quite a nice upgrade if you don't have to pay thru the nose for it.

Actually it makes all the difference. It means you're making assumptions based on an older device and not the current, making it invalid against anything else of the modern day. Surely the point of comparing iOS to Android means having experience running it on the flagship product of that OS. Which for iOS4 is the iPhone 4.
