Another cancer scare

I feel for you mate. Never a good experience to go through. Its good that the problem doesn't seem a big one though.

Keep us updates oh how it goes. Tbh, I'm sure its going to go well :)

My fingers are crossed for your wife OP. I have a friend who's daughter had exactly the same when she was a teenager. She had the radioactive iodine treatment and was soon fine. A few years down the road and things are still all clear.
Good luck!

Thanks mate.

Worst fishing for support thread ever eh
Worst "I've got a wife!" thread ever :p*.

Seriously though I wish you both the best of luck, lets hope it's nothing serious. And even if it is the big C, it's far from game over these days :).

*Please take this in the spirit it intended!

I don't understand this probability thing - it either IS or ISNT cancer.... it's can't be "Probably not cancer"... that's like saying a fish is probably not a dog.

Good luck to both of you!

My parents have a villa in Tobago in answer to the questions at the bottom of the OP :p

There are several types of cells in the thyroid.
With some of these cells the current technology is unable to determine whether they are malignant or not when tested by fine needle aspiration.
That's why the surgery is necessary.
Thyroid cancer is statistically one of the most curable of all human cancers.

Hi guys. So Dawn had the lump and half of her thyroid removed two weeks ago today. She was originally booked in to the general ENT clinic on Friday 8th July to discuss the results at the smaller Heatherwood hospital. They have now brought it forward to the main Wexham Park hospital with the surgeon to Wednesday the 6th July. They have told her to make sure I go with her. Really not sounding good :(

Feel a bit numb at the moment, not sure what to feel.

Don't think about it too much and don't focus completely on the worst outcome. I really hope the news is good!

excuse my stupidity but what exactly is the thyroid and what does it do ?

Basically a gland that sends hormones into the blood that control some pretty important processes in the body. Like metabolism and growth.

Wish you there best of luck mate, got my fingers crossed for you and your wife. As other people have said, if it is the Big C it isnt the be all and end all for things these days, treatments have come on a long way, and the odds are definately in your wifes favour.

Whatever happens she will be fine!

As has been said, the survival rates for thyroid C are very very high and the treatments are not harsh on the body.

I had half of my thyroid removed 2 years ago due to a huge lump (I was 19), turned out to be benign but they cut my recurrent laryngeal nerve so now I have half only half of my voice! How is hers?

Good luck, stay positive - I nearly killed myself with worry!

Stay positive OP. My wife had a very similar scare a couple of years ago - lump on the neck, chance of cancer, waiting for tests, etc, etc. Was the worst time of my life, so I absolutely know what you're feeling. What the doc said to us was "if you're gonna get cancer, that's where you wanna get it - it's the most easily treatable and the prognosis is excellent" :) So even if it is the dreaded C-word, don't assume the worst.

My wife's turned out to be a harmless cyst in the end, fortunately.
