EA to unveil Origin

I know people say competition for Steam is good but I want all my games in one place. I don't want to have to have a separate games system for Activision, EA, Valve, Ubisoft, etc. Shame they can't all come together and offer one service for the PC platform.
Agreed. Already tidying up the physical mess - don't want a virtual mess with several different clients for digital distribution...

K i've downloaded Origin and logged in with 2 different EA accounts I have.

Can link my xbox live/psn account
Looks like steam with a hint of orange

Just EA games at the moment

Hasn't detected the games I have tied to each account, DA, DA2, ME2, all the BF games.

Can't use a custom avatar you have to use predefined ones, dam they knew I was gona use the steam logo.

They have ME2 & Dead Space listed in there best shooters section /facepalm

click you name instead of the games tab :) lists my "purchased" games there. unless you mean games linked to the account through names and login etc then i dont know.

Yeah tried that on both accounts no games showing up for me, I know it's beta so I can cut them some slack on that.

Edit, yeah I meant linked games, not brought anything direct from their store eva.

I could see it being handy if you were a console/mobile phone gamer and wanted to keep in touch with your friends while you browsing the web on your PC.

Yeah you can link Facebook & Twitter too but I never frequent those information stealing sites so don't know the full functionality sorry bud.

I couldn't give a crap about them on a mobile phone and think people who can't go 5 minutes without checking them need professional help.

Point is why would you even need something like that?

****, if ME3 and BF3 are 'Origin'-exclusive, I'm gonna.........be pretty darn irked for a minute and then forget about it :o

Looking at the state of Origin now, it'd be foolhardy for them to do that. It'll just be extra weapons or extra maps that the Origin version has exclusively.

My gut feeling is that the game's won't be origin exclusive, but you'll have to use the tied in features in game for multiplayer or the like (no different to most their games atm) regardless of where you buy.

EA made a big push to get the Sims games up onto Steam at the start of the year, and I've got an email from GOG announcing a new deal with EA to add 25 of their classics to the service.

I'm sure as much as they want it, it'll be suicide for BF3 to launch it as an exclusive.

Installed this yesterday, just seems like a rebranded EADM to me.
I'd already turned off all the nonsense about others being able to view my profile, disabled chat etc.

Yes it's a bloated system for game purchase/delivery/launching, but then so is Steam.

Steam became more than that over time and is basically the only service to offer the 'bloated' bits properly in conjunction with the digital delivery stuff. This is just EA trying to jump on a bandwagon that left without them years ago.

I'd be surprised if Steam would want to carry it though, I agree with you that Origin will likely be integrated into it, like how Steam integrates into Valve games, so will steam want to stock a game which requires them to give you a copy of their competitor, seems unlikely to me. I just ran my EADM, it updated or Origin and the above poster is correct, all they have done is reskinned the client with the word Origin, feature wise nothing has changed, presumably this isn't all they are planning?

Thing is surely for a AAA title like BF3 the risk of NOT carrying it is even greater, since players are going to buy the game (and thus use Origin) anyway?

At least if they sell it through Steam they aren't driving customers away - would you rather a customer uses your product and a competitor product, or just a competitor product?

Steam still carry Games for Windows Live games though.

GFWL just installs a re distributable for the in-game interface, AFAIK it doesn't install the marketplace app, maybe if Origin goes down the route it would be smarter. I don't think Valve will be worried about losing out on carrying one big title, they are absolutely rolling in it anyway.

Why would the game files have to be handled by Origin?

As was said, I'd imagine that it'll be more like GFWL with two distinct parts. A client that handles downloads of games bought within it, and a game client/overlay that just runs separately with the game that supports the friends list and cross game chat + the like.
