Meh... Vauxhalls

You got the thread title back to front. It should be "Vauxhalls...Meh"!

I've never known a car company which can so consistently design such uninspiring, bland and underpowered cars over such a long period of time.

I'll give them their dues, they have finally managed to hire a designer with a bit of creative flare for the latest generation of vehicles, but step inside and you're still left with that feeling of cheapness thanks to the interiors, and the large majority of their engines are still gutless. Yes they do have some quick cars in the range, but they're always overshadowed by other brands.

I've always been happy to give Vauxhall a chance against their rivals and have driven 99% of their models released since the mid 90s, but it has to be said that I've never come away wanting to own one and that says it all to me.

I have an Astra - I don't see what the problem is either, it gets me to work and back, is comfortable and reliable, and reasonably economical. It's not particularly sexy, but I don't need a car to be sexy.

FYI - I chose the Astra over the Megane and Fiesta because it has much wider vision. I like to see what's going on around me!

In the past I've often thought Vauxhalls looked better and in certain sport models, had better engines than the Ford counterpart.

I have to say though, that in each of these cases the Ford handled better and was more comfortable/had a better driving position.

Now neither barely register on my radar, although the lime green Focus RS' get a curious glance. I'm still convinced that had it been 4wd, I would have rushed out and bought one.

Goon smells!!

I echo this opinion........ What?

badboy and goon are both members of the same gaming clan so he is just ribbing him, ignore and move on :D

Goon ive told you before vauxhalls suck barring some of the bigger models like the insignia etc. The corsa is just (in my opinion) a rubbish car, I know a few people that have had corsas and they have all sold them up for other brands after no end of problems.

Go have a look at other models in the same class and Im sure you will see the error of your ways :)

To be fair, with the current line up I would ony pick a vx over a ford / seat / vw / honda / mazda if it was notably cheaper, which when s/h they usually are. As they arn't that bad they can represent good value for money. Certainly not when new though and given the price rises in cars since 04/05 when the bottom spec of the incomming ranges of VX were as much as the mid/top spec outgoing.

Aside from the horrible cheap interior they're also terribly unreliable according to several car surveys.

Also, PLEASE do something about your English and grammar.... One option would be to pay attention in school - or if you're older than that cheat and use spellcheck.
Reading through your posts have given me a headache :(

I bought an Astra because it was what I wanted. The equivalent Focus for the same money was uglier inside and out, and didn't really offer anything beneficial to me over the Astra. I've had it two and a half years now and it still does me fine, and has aged far better than the same year of Focus has (2002). Been very reliable too, since I've had it it's only needed tyres, brakes and a rear coil spring or two, although that's got more to do with the crap roads around here during/after winter.

There really wasn't much else to consider competitor-wise when I was car shopping at the time, so I went with what I liked the most.

hmmm, i love my 2010 astra 1.6t to bits, 0-60 in 8 secs 32mpg around the doors 180bhp. fantastic car imho but i wouldn't call myself a vauxhall fanboy.
when i got it, it was 3 months before i seen another one, i liked the uniquness of having a brand new shape car. (it actually came out in 09 i belive)

Jeremy Clarkson doesn't like Vauxhalls, so I don't. To suggest that they're good cars means one of two things:
a) you haven't driven any cars other than Vauxhalls to know what a good car feels like
b) you don't know how to drive like a real motor enthusiast

clarkson hates nissans and imo nissan produce the best cars.

go back to being a little sheep

I think the trouble with Vauxhall is they're never really top of a group of cars. Things like vx220's/monaros etc are a bit different but for your average family cars they're nearly always beaten by someone out there, normally ford. Before the recent range of cars I'd go as far as to claim I've not seen a pretty corsa/astra/vectra/whatever. You can kind of label them as average and nobody really wants average.

On the flip side of this argument though, the recent range are what I believe to be quite attractive cars (Meriva and agila aside). They also seem to be making an effort on the interior front as well, with the insignia and astra sporting a great new look. In fact my brother was recently looking at astras when getting rid of his troublesome rx8 and found them to be rather nice cars to drive as well. He discounted ford immediately as at the time the new focus hadn't been released and the older model didn't compare aesthetically. Anyway long story short he ended up with a mazda 3 just to end the tale. Personally I think with this new wave they may just redeem themselves a little but they've still a way to go yet as they've got to keep up with the likes of ford who have a habit of bettering them with each new release. I do hope they succeed as vauxhall producing better cars can only be a great thing for consumers. If this new direction continues then perhaps one day OcUK motors may just recommend a Vauxhall but that's not likely for a while.

didnt they use the wrong metal on the subframe and it used to rot away reallllly fast?

First I've heard of that, mine is 10 years old now and still has plenty of life in it. Only 1 spot of surface rust on the bottom of my N/S rear wing.
i dunno but they drove well for a cheap car :)

Agreed, very good spec for it's age too especially in Elite trim.
