Meh... Vauxhalls

First I've heard of that, mine is 10 years old now and still has plenty of life in it. Only 1 spot of surface rust on the bottom of my N/S rear wing.

Agreed, very good spec for it's age too especially in Elite trim.

Its another of those cars that in auto form defy the years its just a good get in and drive car.

All of this is relative though, so a pointless debate amongst men all using a different size ruler.

I find it hard understand that some people only buy a car because they have to. E.g. To get to work, pick up the kids etc.

I own a car and specifically the one I own because I like driving. I enjoy everything about it. I am that guy, who if he needs to go get milk from the local co-op will drive the scenic route. Sure my rationale is to warm the car up :p but it in truth it is about having a short blast and putting a grin on my face.

Slightly OT but in the same way I can't understand why some people have cycling as a hobby (which is actually quite expensive if you take it seriously it seems) I can't understand why some people would buy an Astra. But they may choose to spend their money another way or are as relatively happy with their car as I am with mine.

But I can appreciate price and necessity amongst other things come into it.

So in response to the OP...erm just enjoy your car?

p.s there are some girls out there who know their metal and when they are good looking too. Powerful combination! I mentioned my car in a meeting to a very nice female colleague who proceeded to say "Oh that's the one with the 3.2 out of the M3." She went on to tell me about her remapped S3, I nearly proposed there and then.

Stopped making anything very decent with the Omega (unless you include the Holdens and the Lotus :)). My 98 Elite is still going strong, is a good drive and a nice place to be, which considering it's worth literally nothing, and costs literally nothing is pretty good. Gonna have to go German next though.

That said I don't get the extreme Vauxhall hate on here. People seem to forget to judge them relative to the other marques of boring tin-tops. They might not be that great, but neither really are the rest. Vauxhalls just aren't significantly worse than the others. I've driven plenty of hired fiestas, mondeos, other brands and haven't been particularly impressed with them. The mondeo I hired in france recently in particular had a dreadful looking interior, ridiculously heavy clutch pedal, and the 'engineers' somehow managed to design a cruise control system with exactly the same functionality as the one in my 13 year old omega, but operated by twice as many buttons - 6 instead of 3 - lol!

I drive a Vauxhall Zafira and just don't get the hatred either. At the time I bought there was nothing better in the same price range for the age of car and stuff we wanted locally on the second hand market. It's been a good car, no major issue just wear and tear stuff.
For me personally, I couldn't give a **** what car I drive at the moment because I don't put any effort/value into enjoying motoring anymore because I would need more cash to be able to buy a better base car and to afford to run it.
Vauxhall seem to be picked on for no real reason. It's not like the competition dominates either imo. Some better yes, but not "everything is better so why bother".

Not for no real reason, for example: there was a time when Vauxhall couldn't (or simply didn't) build cars that could go round corners well (cavalier, astra, calibra etc), the competition (Ford, Pugeot, Renault etc) err did.

There is a particular dislike for Vauxhall on this forum, I don't know why. Rover too. Infact people pick at most peoples choices regardless (wrong spec, wrong colour, wrong price, all of the above etc), but then some people do try to show off. I wouldn't worry about it, be happy with what you have.

I'l be honest i dont know why Vauxhall get a hard time on here, they are just another mode of transport, Ford, Renault, Peugeot whatever they get you from A to B chose the one you like the look of, whats the problem.

I drove an Insignia when Avis ******* up my work hire car order. I loved it. I managed to get from Huyton (Liverpool) to Abingdon (Oxford) in 124 minutes. At approx. 187 miles, you do the math

But, Goon is Welsh, so I think we should delete this thread

I miss my Supra!

Girls hate my Vauxhall. :(

Too bad man! When the laydeez get in the back of my Meega, and I raise the rear sunblind to give them some privacy, and turn on the heating on the soft leather seats to keep em warm, then I switch my seat to memory position 2 which is the pimpin position, and crank out Big Pimpin on the 10 speaker Bose system, they literally can't help themselves but throw all their clothes off and start gettin it on until they're creaming themselves all over the leather.*

* this may be a fictional account of activities in a Vauxhall Omega that did not transpire in reality

I like Vauxhalls, but there newer range is terrible.

The Corsa is a shocking car. Why have one when you can have a better car for the same money?

I drive a Vauxhall Zafira

Therefor you clearly have no interest in cars at all. They are just such a bland, dull car. I honestly cant think of a car id least like to own. Do you even need a 7 seater? Even if you did i think id favor some of the 7 seat estate cars out there. If you dont need 6/7 seats...why they hell own a Zafira when an estate car is going to be so much more practical in every possible way

When I bought my MK4 Astra (04 plate) the 1.6 focus was 1.5-2k more on the s/h market. The Astra had the better performance, bigger boot and so on. Honda civics were out of the question cost wise.

Same story now when you look at the prices on the Astra vs Focus. Focus is typically more expensive.

Vauxhalls depreciate like a stone. The fact they cost 1/3 more to buy these days new than 6 years ago has made no difference to residuals. This makes Vauxhalls great value second hand cars.

I am surprised there isn’t equal levels of hate for Renault, Citroen and Peugeot who still make cars with electronics and reliability of cheese.

There is, it just comes under the general heading of "French tat".

In relative terms I'd rather have the French tat...

Girls liked the mini because it was cute but then hated being in it. They think I'm a gay hairdresser with the mx5.

it also makes absolutely no bearing on whether I'm in their pants or not.

Second hand vauxhalls are cheap for a reason, once the warrenty is out people know they break a lot. Vauxhalls have by far the highest MOT failure rate in my garage, and also tend to need the most work, what with things like sensors and egr valves going all the time. I won't even start on the horrid ride quality or seats in most of them.
I once owned a SRI 130 Cavilier, it was ok but it did suffer from the lack of cornering capability but at least it was predictable. I tried to not care about cars and bought a vectra, I had to take it back the next day, it was just horrible in every way.

The rear seats dont fold down so its not the most practical of things unfortunately. It does have ski hatch but I think you might be pushing it getting a bike through :P

In all seriousness though, I haven't ridden a bike in a long time, the boot on the coupe is pretty chunky and the opening is quite wide. I dont think a bike would have any problems going through the gap, somehow I think you would need to remove both wheels to actually get it in though given that the rear seats are fixed.

Comments like this are exactly what I was refering to in my earlier post, its blatent hatred with no justification or cause. Would you actually rather push a broken down Focus however many miles home rather than arrive in comfort in a fully working Astra or Insigna? Dont be so daft.

The rear seats do fold down? They did in mine anyway.

I just don't understand why some people seem totally committed to buying what they perceive as an "average" (i.e. crap) car when they can get something miles better and just as practical for the same money. It's almost as if it's fashionable to have a bad car that you've overpaid for because it shows that you have so many things in your life miles more important than the item that's probably second biggest purchase you'll ever make
