Intel SpeedStep.

Reduces the multiplier when idle to save you some electricity.

Run something like Prime95 to stress the CPU and watch the multiplier increase to 24.

I see your processor is overclocked.

It will go up to 24 x 173.9MHz so nearly 4.2GHz.

Run Prime95 and use RealTemp or CoreTemp to monitor the temperatures.

The Prime95 test will show if the overclock is stable.

Ideally you should run it for a few hours but an hour or so will give you a good idea.

Let us know what the temperature results are.

Go into the BIOS by pressing the Del key during the POST sequence (when the PC first starts).

Go to AI Tweaker.

Change the settings to those shown in the image below where they're different:

Scroll a bit further down and set all the voltages relating to the CPU to Auto.

Press F10 to save the settings and hopefully all will be well.

ace many thanks
this forum is brill

Thank goodness.

I thought I'd lost you for a while.

Just note my edit above regarding the CPU voltages.

Try running Prime95 now and see if your CPU clocks up.

Later you can go back into the BIOS to this page:

Save the settings you have now in an unused profile.

You may find a profile already saved for the stock settings which will restore anything else your mate has messed with.

You could try loading this profile if it exists.

You can always go back to the one you just saved if there's a problem.

ok its all good i think. The only thing i notice is whilst running prime95 my cpu sits at 3200 mhz which is fine. On idle it sits at 3200 also. It all seems stable

Did you enable SpeedStep?

That should enable the processor to clock down when idle.

Make sure the settings on this page in the BIOS are as per the picture:

And go into Intel PPM Configuration and ensure Intel SpeedStep is enabled there.

That looks fine apart from the voltage is too high.

Did you set the voltages to auto as shown in post #14?

Turbo Boost is giving you a small speed bump but that's as it should be.

Does it still not clock down?
