TROLLY RAGE!!

Odd, I never really did any big shopping, I first have the money ready, pay, and then after paying pack it into bags. It's why they have the end thing split into 2 imo...
Never thought of packing stuff while they are scanning it...

I work weekends at Tesco, so where to begin...

Firstly, regarding scan speeds, we're watched on how fast we scan, needing to average a certain number per hour. Though to stop people just blitzing the items through as fast as possible, time spent not doing anything, as well as the time difference between hitting the 'total' button and payment being processed is also timed to give an overall rating. Most cashiers for this reason sign out whenever possible so that they aren't on the system and having time counted against them.
The items per hour thing isn't used for pay or anything, just every year there's a performance review style thing, they just look over the figures, see how you are compared with the average, if you're close then its all ok, if you're somewhat lower they suggest ways to get it up, and if its too high, they say slow down.

We also have a mystery shopper test, pretty obvious. People go round the store and mark it. For tills there's 24 marks available, ranging from simple things (6 marks for saying hello, goodbye and smiling), but also making sure the till is tidy, you look presentable, have a visible namebadge, offer carrier bags, offering to help pack, and asking if they have a clubcard.

So you get asked these questions at Tesco because we have to. Some people keep bags in their pockets, so even if it looks like they don't have bags, I ask in case they do. Or their husband/wife does and they're just grabbing something else. In which case I wouldn't start packing.

Personally, when asked to pack, I'll do it sensibly, cold stuff together, heavy stuff at the bottom, etc. In any shop there's going to be people who just bung stuff in however, they just do the job for the money, and to an extent I do to, but I put extra effort in because I'm still representing the company, and I want us to look good. Plus soon I'll be getting shares, so the better we do, the more money I get through that :p

I know I'm personally not the most talkative guy, so won't try to start a conversation but will continue it if the other person does. I'm often on the basket till (Which is labeled as such), and it ranges from being massively busy with a huge queue to nobody there for stretches of a time. If its empty, I don't mind people coming in with trolleys that don't have much stuff in. Normally its older people who just can't carry a basket despite having just a couple of items, but when its busy I will generally turn away people who have silly trolley loads. Also, I've noticed so many times people queuing for the self service tills right next to me while I'm sitting with nobody to serve, same for the other person on the checkout next to me. They often have to be ushered over by a manager to try and reduce the queue! I don't have a problem with the self service tills myself, though only 1 person to man 8 of them often isn't enough, or the person that is manning them starts chatting to another customer, and ignores all the red lights. As I'm sitting right next to them doing nothing, they often ask me to help, but I'm not trained to use them so have no idea how to fix most problems, though apparently I'm getting the training soon. Yay!

So, things which annoy me? Not all that much, really. I don't mind too much people being on their phones, though eating stuff as they go around is a big no-no. Customers getting angry with me when their card is declined is one.
Also, people taking something off the shelf which has no label on. Obviously if its just a damaged barcode you can't really blame them, they shouldn't have to check everything they pick up to see if the barcode works, but a jar of pasta sauce with no label on at all, while all the other ones on the shelf have labels? What am I supposed to do with that?
Equally, people dumping cold stuff they don't want anymore at the end of the tills. If its non-chilled then its not so much of a problem, we have people to go around and collect them all up and stick them back on the shelves, but cold stuff needs to be kept cold! Give it to someone, say you've changed your mind! We won't hate you for it! We will hate you if we have to waste it because you hid it out of the way though!

whats wrong with eating stuff as you go around?

If they actually pay for them. Some people do, how many just pocket the wrapper or 'forget' about it? Plus possible hygene issues, and eating grapes and other weighed items.

"Unknown item in bagging area":mad::mad:

I try not to let petty stuff like this annoy me anymore but I can't help but laugh when I see someone try to put a whole week's shopping through one of the self service tills. Do they really think that they can scan and bag single handedly quicker than with the help of store staff?

I work in asda and it doesnt bother me although its not something I'd personally do. Although I've never seen someone eating weighed items (that would be annoying)

I called the line though when I saw someone eating a full packet of greasy rotisserie chicken on the way round. Wtf!

Was thinking about writing something along these lines, though I work for Sainos..

Things that annoy me about supermarkets are customers that just stand behind you and expect you to move, what happened to manners - how hard is it to say excuse me, or thank you when you do move before asked.

And I personally hate self service tills, just another money saver for the share holders that don't give a toss for the colleagues. They also rarely work like they should.

Only other thing is the stigma working in a shop gives you, though that's another story.. haha!

Our self service tills seem to work very well, and I think we use the same system as Sainsburys from what I remember seeing at our local store. The main problem with self service is the backend data entered in. Obviously, every item that is sold has to be given a weight which is entered into the system, and then when a customer scans it and places it into the bagging area, which is a giant set of scales, it measures the weight and compares it to what weight should have gone in. If its all been done properly there should be very few mismatched weights, the 'unexpected items in bagging area' will then correspond with people either trying to steal items, or who thought they had scanned it but the item hadn't scanned properly. Of course, no system is perfect, but I don't have a problem with them. It takes the load off the basket tills which would otherwise be flooded, and it seems must customers seem to prefer them to the actual manned tills.

Though after a day of work, I have more things to add to the list.

The store closes at 4. It says so at the entrance. We give reminders at half 3, quarter to, five to, and at 4pm. These say that the store closes at 4. That does not mean that you should still be walking around looking for things you want to buy at 5 past 4! And there's been times when I'm walking out after the store closed and there's been people arguing or pleading with the security guard to go in. No! It's been open 6 hours! (Plus half an hour extra for browsing) If you couldn't be bothered to get up early enough, don't expect to be let in after it closed! Grr!

Tescos next to our store - well 2 doors down - usually has at least 1 self scan not working and only 2 manned tills. Hence why we take roughly 20k more than them a week yet we don't have a frozen section, not even ice creams. Why replace a person who will pack your bags for you and can provide lottery and cigs with a machine that can't do either? seeing as at least 80% of the customers we serve ask for either or most the times both.

Its Theft... u havent paid for it, u can be prosecuted
its not theft if you intend to pay for it and you havent left the store? isnt that why security guards dont try to stop you until your attempting to leave?

Correct, it only becomes theft once you have passed all possibly payment points without paying.

People who use the self service till with a full weeks worth of shopping...

ARRGH even thinking about it makes me mad :p

whats wrong with that? some of them say "place the item in the trolley" they arent touted as "20 items or less" are they?
They should be touted as 20 items or less...

People think they can do it faster than a person that is trained on the tills - They end up wasting their time and other peoples time - AND they get annoyed and stressed with it and end up taking it out on the people that have to help morons like them :p
