what engine oil do you use?

If you go to the following website http://www.castrol.com/castrol/iframe.do?categoryId=9024084&contentId=7044829 and put in your reg or make/model Castrol will tell you what they would recommend for your car however its not guaranteed to be what Toyota recommend as Castrol are trying to sell you something :P

As stated above Halfords would have had a list book in the oil section of cars and what they use and it should say in your manual too.

Basically when you see something like 10w-40 the two numbers are the viscosity rating (thickness) of the oil, the are two for cold/warm. The three types (mineral/semi/synthetic) are literally different types of oil, as you car was made after 1990 it wont use mineral oil, this is still sold for old cars and because its cheaper and some people just don't care what they sling in (may be other reasons too, like engine rebuilds). The manual should say if you they specify semi or synth. Personally I would always go for fully synth and try to match the viscosity ratings for my car to ensure correct tolerances, but to each their own.

You never top up the oil if required?

The computer thing still says it's full :D

As I was picking up the car they made a massive point that if I needed any oil before the next service it MUST be blah blah blah make and type and I've forgotten it already.

Remind me not to buy a car off you in future.

yeah because not remembering the grade of oil and make makes him such a bad person doesnt it ?

Because after all, we live in the 1800s and don't have a telephone with which to ring our car dealer and ask them what oil we should use do we ?

Aye, it's a sin, there is a place in hell reserved for him.

I've had a car 2 weeks, I've checked the oil once every few days (as it does it when you put the key in) and it still says full. The car has just 3 weeks ago had it's service and I have the invoice for work carried out and the new oil put in. They told me what oil to put in if needed (I asked) and I've forgotten, when/if the car needs more oil before a service I'd obviously find out again and use the correct stuff.

As my car does not appear to use oil or leak oil I have never needed to top it up in the past seven years. If I did need any then I would just get some 10W40 as per the handbook, probably Castrol Magnatec. I do check the level every few months and get a garage to change the oil each year.

5w30 Fully Synth Castrol is about £22 for 4L in Halfords

Bought some recently for the gf's Yaris

Do the oil filter and air filter at the same time, about £5 for oil filter, £9-15 for air filter

Castrol 10-60 stuff appx £50 for 4L thankfully the bloke I bought it off left a full can in the boot

I get mine from Opie Oils, they have some good deals from time to time.

I have a full can too as I'm yet to put any oil in. I don't do many miles, but thankfully she doesn't appear to be one of the thirstier cars.
