Hi All,

I'm looking at getting a new phone in the next month or so. At the moment I have an HTC Wildfire, the wife has a desire, and I have an Iphone 3gs for work. So I'm looking for something different hence I'm looking at a BB, something I've never had.

I see there are two new phones coming out the BB 9900 and the 9930, however everywhere I look, including the BB site, the don't say what the difference is between the two, the specs are rolled into one, so I gather they have the same specs, but what does this mean? Two phones being released with the same specs? I know I'm missing something, something blatantly obvious I'm sure, but what exactly is it?

moving from android/iphone you'll feel massively limited by a blackberry, they are a fair way behind in the smartphone race. They are only good if you like keyboards really.

As above. Don't see any advantage to going blackberry. Better of getting more up to date android. Just set up a new high end BB for my sister in law and it felt like a smartphone from 2 generations ago (and that's being kind).

Hmm that's interesting, to be honest I don't think I've really thought about it too much. I just took it for granted they were quite good, as I hear quite abit about them being good, maybe its BB fanboys though. Then again I don't want to break the bank on a new phone either want to try and keep the price of my contract down. I may have to think again depending on what other people say. Hard thing is where I live there no phone shops to play with new phones :(

If you want a phone phone with excellent messiging, routing, handling, battery lofe go black berry.

If you want a pocket computer that also makes calls go for android/iphone. Comparing iphone to blackberry for the function o a phone leaves the iphone feeling like 2 generations ago.

people make calls with phones? how last century

Coming from a bold 9700 to galaxy s2 I've gotta agree with the above. I really liked my bold which ran os6 but it really feels stupidly dated now. Its like there trying to compete with tech a few years out of date. A friend of mine just got the 9780 on a 2 year contract. It already feels old now so I feel sorry for how out dated its going to be in.a year or 2.

im also just about to go from a blackberry bold 9700 to a SGSii

(soon as orange have them in)

so going the other way does seem like a backwards move

how so? There is only so good a phone can be at being a phone, and I can't fault the iphone or decent android handsets for that function. Simple, fast and good quality. I have a bold 9700, htc desire, iphone 3g and sgs2, and will have an iphone 4 tomorrow btw and can't see any benefit of the Bold over the others bar the battery.

Also, i find the email functionality at least on BES blackberrys lacking, you can't have multiple accounts etc where as android/iphone can comfortably cope with multiple accounts, and view folders properly etc.

In fact your last point is imo the only valid one: battery life is great on a blackberry, but mainly because it has a crap screen and doesn't do anything!

Man this thread has totally messed all my thoughts of Blackberries now lol. I just don't know. Looking at my upgrade options, sgs2 is going cost me 31 a month and 129 to upgrade. I would say 31 is the very top of my budget not including the 129 to pay for the phone. Hmmm this is going be harder than thought!

OP how about a WP device? Different to the things you currently have but more media oriented than a Blackberry?

Pardon my ignorance, WP? Windows Phone? If that's what you mean, I'm not sure if I'm keen on one of these, I have never owned a windows based phone, however I used one a few years ago and yes there software was a bit older then, I some how was really put off it. Maybe this has changed now though?

What is a good standard of Windows based phone just now?

Omnia 7 is the best of the current crop.
I have one, its awesome :)

Please do not compare old Windows Mobile versions to the new WP7. Its a whole new OS with a totally user friendly, fluid and quick UI :)

A BB is more directed at it's market than others. As long as you only email and text you'll love it but if you vary from this path you're probably going to be unhappy with it's offerings.

As to what you're missing - I think the 9900 is sometimes labeled as the 9990 to go alongside the 9930? If so one is for the US market (9990), one for the worldwide. Appears to be packing a new processor, dual life work/play mode (jesus E nokia's had this in 2005) and some OS tweaks.

OP seriously go for the device that suits your needs the best...everyone has different needs and make their choices based upon what they need a phone to do.

Im blackberry through and through simple as that...of course people say the BB devices are ancient compared to Android or iphone...personally i dont think they are as much as people make them out to be. Ive had Android handsets and if your into charging your battery multiple times a day then great...for me i wasnt and found it to be a royal PITA. Plus as fancy as the hardware is on the Androids...there was obviously somethinbg massively missing for me or else i wouldnt have got so bored of Android and switched back to Blackberry....BB devices have great battery life compared to the Android...hell ill go as far as to say id rather pick an iphone over the Android...biggest issue Android has at the moment is the fragmentation of their OS ie too many devices running different versions...they need to consolidate that rubbish.

Anyhow the major differences between the 9900 and 9930 is that the 9900 is for GSM networks ie which means most of the world whereas the 9930 is for CDMA so you wont see the 9930 being released over here...its more for the American/Canadian market as some networks still run on CDMA.

Other than that there really is no major difference between the 2 as far as i know....9900 will be my next BB device for sure, i wont consider any other device apart from Blackberry at the moment as it ticks all the boxes for me.

Btw i also have an iphone4 which i think is brilliant for what it does...again its my multimedia device ie mp3s and various apps...one thing i cannot fault the iphone4 for is its range of apps.

I've got four phones in my desk draw (including a blackberry) with better battery life than either of the android handsets I've got. Do I use any of them? No.

No one disagrees the battery isnt good on bb's but that's pretty much its only strong point.

Agreed, They do sync with outlook well, but thats only because of BES sat between it and the backend. So its not fair to compare most other devices to it on that front. WP7 however synced to Outlook via the WI and it was perfectly good!

I have:
Windows Phone 7 for personal
Ipod Touch for demos of software
Blackberry for work/email

I looked at andriod when I was looking at my current device, but after hearing the battery life moans, the OS fragmentation on the current devices, and also the constant weird and random crashes (in before "my android device never crashes") it was never a real option.

you cant beat a blackberry...... for work, but as a your personal phone i would say no you will get bored.

I love BB's and had the 8900, and the 9700, both great and yes battery is brilliant. but they are in my view intended for the office world, and they had a craz of being popular in the general market, i see them heading back and being a main stay in the corp world.

Android 2.3 syncs VERY well with exchange, i am using it daily with both exchange 2010 and 2003.

I don't like android overall as there are some very poor devices running very poor builds of it, but android on a decent handset is absolutely brilliant, and fragmentation etc isnt an issue if you choose your handset carefully. I never had an issue with things not working on my Desire, and I very much doubt I will on my SGS2, but if i had bought a less mainstream device then I probably would've struggled when updates stopped being issued etc.

Also I think at least from my experience blackberrys are starting to fade in the SME world, they are very expensive over phones that don't need their own licensed server (if you have over 75 devices, an apple/android device would save over £1800 a month just in BES costs!) and are very limited for document viewing or quick edits on the go VS iPhone and Android.
